BASE OR SUPPORT FOR FURNITURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,553, dated October 10, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARKS SAMUELs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bases or Supports for Furniture and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a base or support on which various articles can be turned or faced about while the base remains fixed or stationary and the invention consists in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the base or support sectioned along '1; c Fig. 2. In the drawings the letter A indicates a baseor support. A frame or movable portion B is adapted to move on base A as set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 464,803, granted to me December 8, 1891. A diskshaped support H H is interposed between the movable portion or platform B and the bottom portion or supportD of an article such as a folding bed, fountain, show case or other object. The disk-shaped support H H consists of the disk or wheel H fixed to movable portion B and of the disk or wheel H fixed to the portion or object D. The portion D is made to swivel about a pin or pivot O extending from the disk portion H. The portion or article D is provided with a pin or guide I adapted to travel in a cam shaped way or track formed by inner and outer cam shaped rails or tracks L L secured on or rising from base A and between which the pin I projects. It the base A stands with its rear portion against a wall and the portion D is swiveled the action of guide I moving along between the tracks L L will move the portions B D outward or away from the wall to prevent scraping or injury during the rotation or swiveling. The guide I has an antifriotion roller M to ease the movement of the guide between tracks L L. Between the disk or wheel portions H H are interposed balls or ball bearings N to enable the portion H to readily turn or swivel on portion H. A track or way P for the balls N is formed on one of the disk portions. The balls N are kept apart from one another by what may be conveniently called a spacer. This spacer is shown as consisting of a ring W having holes X for the insertion of the balls so that the latter are kept a suitable space apart. The ringW is of sufficient thinness to allow the balls to project beyond the faces of the ring so that the balls can bear properly against the disk portions H H while at the same time the spacer or ring W prevents the balls from coming together so that the latter will remain properly interposed between the disk portions H H. The motion of portion B is limited by a stop or block Y on said portion adapted to strike against or be arrested by base A as seen in Figs. 4 and 5. The base A has rollers Z on which the portion B can travel or move easily, and said portion B also has rollers or casters an adapted for easy travel or movement of the portion B. In case the entire base A is to be moved its motion or dislodgment is eased by the casters b. The track L is shown as interrupted or cut away so that in the position of parts shown in Fig. 1 the disk portions H H can enter between the track sections L and approach closely to the track L allowing the device to close or come together snugly and compactly.

What. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of a base A having inner and outer rails L and L forming a camshaped track and the outer rail centrally broken away, a sliding frame B, an article D having a guide-pin I projecting between the said rails, a pivot 0 connecting the slidingframe and the said article, and disk supports H and H interposed between the article and the sliding frame and adapted to enter the broken away part of the outer rail when the sliding frame is moved to its normal position, substantially as described.

2.
