J. B-. ADT. QONVEYER BELT- No. 506,456. i Patented oct.' 1o, i893.
UNITED "Srrfinsv PATENT OFFICE.
JOHNB. ADT, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CONVEYER-BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,456dated October 10, 1893.
Application lcd April 3,1893. Serial No. 468.808. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. ADT, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have inventedl certain Improvements in Slatted Conveyor Belts and Aprons, of which the following is a specification.
In the construction ot wide slatted belts and aprons, Where the hinges extend entirely across the belt to prevent spaces being` formed between'the slats as they pass around drums or pulleys, it is found difficult and expensive to drill the holesiu the members of the hinges designed for the reception of the pins.
The object of the present invention is, therefore, to dispense with long hinges and use hinges only of such length as will give the requisite strength, and use independent means for closing the joints between the slats, which may be easily and cheaply applied. By this means there need be no limit to the Width of the belts or aprons, wide ones being as easily fitted up as narrow ones.
In carrying outthe said invention, l provide the slats with ordinary shorthinge members, and groove the under adjacent edges of the slats between the hinges, in such manner that when two slats are connected by a pin, there exists between the slats, in the under side, a semicircular groove, vthe center of which is in alignment with the center of the hinge pin. Into this groove is placeda piece of pipe of a length corresponding with the distance between the hinges, and the hinge pin is :run through the hinges and the pipe, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of apiece ot the improved slatted belt, with a portion of it shown as passing over a drum. Fig. 2 is a top View of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an under side view of a portionot the belt shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an under side view of one slat without the hinge pin.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the slats. Each slat has at one edge, the inner members a of the hinge, and at the other, the outer members b, and where the edges are not occupied with the hinge members, they are grooved, the groove being one quarter of an entire circle, the diameter of which is practically the same as that of the rounded projecting portions of the hinge members, as shown in the drawings.
B B are pieces ofV ordinary pipe placed on the hinge pinsb'etween the inner members of the hinges, which fill tne grooves and form close connections between the slats. From this construction it will be seen that only short hinge members are to be drilled, and
wide belts can be as easily fitted up as narrow ones.
-I 'claim as my invention-f i In a slatted belt or apron, the combination of a series of slats having the usual hinge members, hinge pins to connect the said members, and pieces of pipe placed over the exposed portions of the said hinge pins to close the spaces between the hinged slats, substantially as, and for the purpose specified.
JOHN B. ADT.
