A- denotes the front axle of a vehicle, which axle may be of any suitable shape and may have either a single elliptic cross-spring O mounted on it as represented in Figs. 1, 2, 11 and 12 of the drawings, or have two semi-elliptic springs OO hung on it asy shown in Figs. 3 and 4. of the drawings.
R- represents the reach which may also be either single as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, or double as shown in Fig. l. Said reach or reaches I couple to the front running gear by the following devices: To the top and bottom of the axle are rigidly secured the metallic arms-hand -'h, the upper arm he-"- being formed with a saddle -sby which it rests upon the axle, in case the duplex spring -O-O- is hung on the axle at opposite sides thereof, but when the single cross-spring is mounted upon the axle the said saddle rests uponthetop of the lowerhalf of the spring as shown in Fig. l2 of the drawings. The saddle is rmly secured to the axle by means of clips -t"z"-. To the rear end of the arm 1his pivotally connected the reach or reaches -R- for which purpose I prefer t0 form the rear end ofthe said arm with a socket -ywin its under side and with the top-circle plate -jconcentric with said socket, and to the top of the wooden reach I fasten the rne-` tallic strap -Z'- which has the hub -kand lower circle-plate -j formed integral therewith or rigidly attached to it. Said hub entering the socket -j. Directly under the hub 7cand axially in line therewith is a socket -k'- also integral with the strap -Z- and into this socket is inserted a hub -cformed on the rear end of the arm -h-. The aforesaid hubs are provided with a central vertical orifice through which the kin g-bolt -Z- passes. To the upper arm -h- I attach a supplemental safety coupling -`lconsisting of a metallic strap or rod extending lengthwise of the said arm and provided at its rear end with an eye -,Z through which they king-bolt passes. This safety coupling I vprefer to make adjustable to take up the Wear of the eye -Z-, and for this purpose I form the arm -hwith a longitudinal cavity -mfor the reception of the rod said cavity terminating with a perforated ear -'mon the front end of the arm -hand through this ear protrudes the end of the rod -Z which is screw threaded and provided with a nut 11.- which bears on the front of the arm as illustrated in Figs. 9 and lO of the drawings; By tightening said nut the opposite end of the rod or safety coupling -lobtains a firm hold on the king-bolt. said king-bolt and in line therewith is the center of another fifth wheel by which the" running gear is pivotally connected to the body-B. This latter fifth-wheel thus has its pivot likewise back of the axle. It is support- Above the afore- IOS the rear circle by means of alongit'fudinal tie dpreferably formed in one vpice therewith, and the two top circle-platesS-.iaV-and are likewise united by a longitudinal tie -CL To maintain the two large'jcircleplates -ct-ain proper contact with-each other I bolt to the top of the saddle fafa lip or tongue -O- which laps onto a rabbet, r, in the top of the top-circle-plate The rear end of the lower tie -d-, is pro;-A vided with a rigid upward projecting hub', -owhich enters into a socket -o ong.v the under side of the upper tie cl-said hub and socket being axially in line with the.; lower king bolt -Z- and constituting the pivot upon which the two circle-plates -af-f and -bturn. These circle-plates and ties I preferably form of malleable cast iron, and' the adjacent sides of the large circle-plates@A face with steel wear-plates. The rear upper circle plate -bis also cast with a transverse bar -gto which are tied the endsfof the upper large circle-plate -aeitherl by the latter being formed integral with said bar, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, or by extensions -ttW-amof the steel linings riveted or bolted to the ends ofthe bar -gas represented in Figs. I and 5 of the drawings. On a vehicle having a single spring -C- over the axle as shown iny Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, the large circleplates are entirely back of the spring and are supported thereon by the saddle s as before described. In this caseI form the lower arm or tie -cZ- with a depression -dand from the rear lower circle plate -bwith forwardly and downwardly extending arms -e-e-, and upon the free ends of these arms and upon the depressed portion of the tie -d- I fasten a cross-bar -gto the ends of which I firmly secure the ends of the extensions am-amof the large lower circle-plate Q. Through the center of the before described hub-0- and socket -opasses the king-bolt -othe lower end of which passes through a steel or wrought iron strap --tfastened to the under side of the longitudinal die -dto reinforce the same.- The king-bolt is provided with the usual head on its upper end and with a nut on its lower end and thus ties the aforesaid parts together. To the top of the cross-bar gand to the top of the front or large circle plates are bolted two wooden bolsters or cross-bars -D--D- which are fastened to the under side of the body 13. The described ifth-wheel is thus hung to the body.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with the front axle, bod and cross-spring or springs mounted on said axle, a iifth wheel having its pivot back of the axle and composed of large circle-plates in front of its pivot and small circle-plates at the rear of the pivot and supported by said large 4plates upon the spring or springs, and cross-bars fastened on the top of said iifthwheel and to the body respectively over the pivot of the fifth-wheel and over the front portion thereof, as set forth.
2. In combination with the frontaxle, body and cross-spring or springs mounted on said axle, the fifth-wheel consisting of the large circle-plates -a-a-, small circle plates -b-b'- cross-ties g, g and thelongitudinal ties -cZ-CZ, said fifth-wheel being mounted with its large circle-plates upon the spring or springs and the small circle-plates hung to the body back of the axle, as set forth.
3. In combination with the frontaxle, body and cross-spring, ofthe fifth wheel pivotally hung to the body back of the axle and con- 2sisting of large circle-plates in front of the pivot, small circle-plates back of the pivot, longitudinal ties connecting the front and rear circle-plates, a saddle extending from the 'front of the large bottom circle-plate and seleured to the top of the spring, and a lip rigidly secured to the saddle and bearing on the Y flarge top circle-plate, as set forth.

In combination with the front axle, body and cross-spring, thelarge circle-plates aa-, saddle son the lower of said plates riding on the spring, clips fastening said saddle to the springs, the small circle- ICO plates -b-bback of the springs, the 1on- Y igitudinal tie -duniting the top circleplates, the longitudinal ties -duniting the :bottom circle-plates and formed with the degpression -d,-, the arms -e-eextendfing from the small bottom circle-plate -by"and deiiected downward, the braces -f-- connecting the free ends of said arms to the clips *J2-@L1 the cross-bar -gfastened to said ends of the arms and to the lower tie --tZ-, holsters -D-D- secured to the top of the fifth-wheel, and the large circle plate extensions -ct-aattached respectively to the cross-bar -gand rear bolster -D, substantially as described and shown.
5. In combination with the cross-spring, the fifth-wheel having its upper plateV provided with a rabbet in its outer edge, a saddle projecting from the bottom circle-plate and mounted rigidly on the spring, anda lip fixed to the saddle and lapping onto the rabbet of the top circle-plate, as set forth.
6. In combination with the axle, rigid rearwardly extending coupling arms fastened to the axle and in different p1anes,acircle plate rigidly attached to or integral with the upper IIO arm, the lower circle-plate formed with a rearsaid wardly extending shank, the reach attached to said shank, and the king-bolt tying the lower coupling arm to the lower circle-plate as set forth.
'7. In combination with the axle, an arm extending rigidly rearward from the axle, the reach pivotally connected to the rear end of arm, and a safety coupling extending lengthwise of said arm and secured thereto and receiving the king-bolt through it, as set forth.
8. In combination with the axle, a coupling rm extending rigidly rearward from the axle, a top circle-plate fixed to the rear end of said arm, a bottom circle-plate formed with a rearwardly extending shank, the reach attached nto. said shank, a supplemental safety coupling extending lengthwise of said couplingam and provided with an eye at its rear end and screw-threaded at its front end, a nut on said end bearing on the adjacent end of the poupling arm, and the king-bolt passing through the eye of the aforesaid safety-coupling, as set forth.
9. In combination with the axle, the arm -hrigidly attached to and extending rearward from the axle, the circle-plate -jintegral with the said arm and formed with the socket-j-in its under side, the circle-plate -jformed with the hub -kentering said socket, and having the socket -cin its underside, the arm -hextending rigidly from the axle and terminating with the hub -centering the socket -o-, the kingbo1t-Z passing through the said sockets and hubs, and the reach attached to the lower circle-plate, as set forth.
