UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH HASSENPFLUG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WOVEN TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,365, dated October 10, 1893.
Application filed August 18, 1891. Serial No. 402,993. (Specimens-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HASSEN- PFLUG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved trimming, in which trams of silk, mohair or other suitable material are interwoven with the heading in such a manner that a selvage is formed at each side of the heading and that in the facing cut trams and looped or uncut trams of any suitable design are formed, whereby a very characteristic and highly ornamental trimming for ladies garments is obtained; and the invention consists of a trimming composed of aheading formed of warpthreads and of tram weft-threads which are interwoven with the warp-threads so as to form a facing for the heading and a selvage at each side of the same, the facing being composed of cut trams and of looped or uncut trams which are disposed of in the facing according to a regular design, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, represents a top-view of my improved trimming. Fig. 2, is a top-view of the same, after the edges are trimmed and the auxiliary warpthreads by which the cut and uncut trams are formed, are withdrawn. Fig. 3, is a topview of the trimming, after steaming the same. Fig. 4., is a representation of the pattern-chart according to which the tram-weft threads are interwoven with the warp-threads of the heading. Fig. 4, is a diagram showing the arrangements of the warp-threads of the heading and the interweaving of the tram weftthreads with the same and with the auxiliary warp-threads and the wires for forming the looped trams. Fig. 4 is a diagram showing the heading on a larger scale and the interweaving of the tram weft-threads with the warp-threads of the heading, and Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are respectively vertical transverse sections on lines 5 5, Fig. 1, 6 6, Fig. 2, and 7 7, Fig. 3, said sections representing the different steps in the manufacture of the trimming.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a trimming which is composed of a heading a and a facing b, the facing being formed of silk, mohair or other tramswhich are partly cut and partly uncut or looped, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The weft-thread is interwoven with the warp-threads of the heading a and with a series of auxiliary warp-threads d d, which is arranged at each side of the heading.
The trimming is made on a loom of the ordinary construction by means of a single shuttle only, which passes the weft-thread through the Warp-threads and around the wires e at each side of the heading which serve for form- 7 ing the looped trams. The warp-threads of the heading are each formed of multiples of threads, the end warp-threads being formed of eighteen threads and the intermediate warp-threads of two, four and six threads respectively as shown clearly in Fig. 4 The weft-thread is interwoven with the warpthreads of the heading and with the auxiliary warp-threads and with the wires e as shown by the diagram in Fig. 4 the intermeshing of the weft-threads with the Warp-threads of the heading being more clearly indicated in Fig. 4, while the pattern-chart shown in Fig. 4, illustrates the eight successive picks by which the facing and the selvage of the heading is formed The first and second pick at the right hand side and the eighth and ninth picks at the left hand side form a selvage at each side of the heading while the intermediate picks form with the auxiliary warpthreads at d and the wires 'e the trams from which the facing of the trimming is produced. When the trimming leaves the loom, it has the appearance shown in Fig. 5, the trams of the Weft-thread being retained by the auxiliary Warp-threads d d. The edges of the trams ward removed and with the wires 6. The wires 6 simply serve for forming the looped trams which are slipped off from thewires as thetrimming is produced in the loom in the manner well known to practical weavers. After the trimming is woven in the loom, it is removed and cut off at the edges so as to cut ends of some of the trams, while the trams which are looped in the wires remain in uncut or looped condition. The auxiliary warp -threads by which the ends of the uncut trams are formed, are then removed in lateral direction, which can easily be done as they freely leave the cut trams. The facing of the trimming is parted along the center-line of the heading and is then subjected to a steaming action by which the uniformrounded-off form of the facing shown in Fig. 7 is obtained in the manner well known to manufacturers of plush and similar trimmings. By means of difierent pattern-charts difierent designs of looped or uncut trams may be produced in the cut trams, so that a variety of ornamental designs is obtained by which a very characteristic and highly ornamental appearance is imparted to the trimming, as the appearance of the looped or uncut trams differs essentially from the cut trams even though the color of the frame is alike.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A trimming composed of a heading formed of warp-threads and of tram weft-threads which are interwoven therewith so as to form a selvage at each side of the heading, and a facing which is composed of cut and looped or uncut trams, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH I-IASSENPFLUG.
