SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,278, dated October 10, 1893.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Bung for Barrels, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bungs; and it has for its object to provide an improved bung and the bushing therefor, that are adapted to be arranged in the ordinary bung-hole of beerkegs, barrels, &o.

To this end the main and primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive bung and bung bushing, which when secured in position in the bung hole will not yield to excessive pressure of gas in the keg or barrel so as to cause a leakage, but will withstand jars, &c., without coming out of the bung hole, thereby avoiding the many objections to the ordinary wooden bu ngs.

With these and many other objects in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. 7

In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1, is an enlarged detail sectional View of a portion of a stave having a bung and hung bushing in the bung hole thereof as contemplated by this invention. Figs. 2'and 3 are detail perspective views of the bung and bung bushing separated from each other. 7

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a portion of a keg or barrel stave in which is tapped an ordinary bung hole B. Adapted to be inserted in the bung hole B, from the inside of the stave, is the bushing O. The bushing O, is formed of suitable metal in order to withstand continued use and consists of an interiorly threaded neck D, and an annular flange E, at one end of said neck, which is designed to be drawn against the inside edges of the bung hole. The bushing O is interiorly threaded as at F, and is provided upon the neck portion thereof with a series of longitudinally disposed beveled or tapered ribs G, which, when the bushing is inserted in position, are designed to enter the body of the stave at the edges of the bung-hole, so as to prevent the bushing from turning in the bung hole. The

flange E, is provided upon one face thereof with the circular beveled or tapered rib H,

which when the bushing has been inserted into the bung hole, is designed to enter the wooden stave or barrel head as the case may having at one side a circular beveled or tapered rib K, adapted to enter the wood surrounding the bung hole, after the bung has been screwed as far as possible into the bushing, by means of a suitable wrench turning on the integral polygonal wrench head or elevation L, upon the outer face of the bung. After the bushing has been inserted in position within the bung hole from the inside of the stave or barrel head, as far as possible, the exteriorly threaded bung is next inserted into the interiorly threaded bushing from the outside, and by means of a suitable Wrench, the two parts are drawn tightly together so as to tightly wedge the bushing into the bung hole, and also secure the bung firmly in position so as to prevent any possibility of leak- FIOlll the foregoing it is thought that the construction and many advantages of the herein described bung and bung-bushing are apparent without further description.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of an interiorly threaded bushing neck adapted to be inserted in a bung hole and having an exterior series of longitudinally disposed beveled ribs, and an annular flange at one end provided with a circular beveled rib upon one face adapted to enter the wood surrounding the bung hole,and an exteriorly threaded bung adapted to be threaded into the interiorly threaded bushing from the opposite side of the bung hole, and provided with an enlarged annular flange at one end having a circular beveled rib at one side, substantially as set forth.
