Description

[No Model.)
J. H. TITUS. PHOTOGRAPHIG BACKGROUND.
No. 505,968. Patented Oct. 3,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. TITUS, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
PHOTOGRAPHIC BACKGROUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,968, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed March 6, 1893. Serial No. 464,880. (No specimens.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. TITUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Baby- Chair, Background, and Frame; and I do hereby declare the followingr to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved photographic chair and background for the same, and consists in certain details of construction, and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a side elevation of my improved chair and background, a part of which is shown in section. Fig. 2, is a rear elevation of my improved back ground, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a reduced perspective view of the chair and background, said'ground having the representation of a portion of a room showing the manner in which the chair will appear to stand on the carpet.
To construct a background in accordance with my invention, I provide a frame of a suitable height and width, constructed of Wood or other material. Forming a part of this frame are two vertically arranged pieces 6 connected together by several cross braces, one of which 9 serves as a support for a chair, as will be hereinafter described. Above this cross piece 9 is an opening 7 formed through the canvas 5 covering the frame, through which the hand of a person may be passed to hold or support an infant placed in the chair at the front of the background. Above this opening 7 is arranged a head rest 8, adapted to support the head of the infant when above the back of the chair. Painted on the front of this back ground 5 is a scene, representing a portion of a room; showing a part of the carpet 10, together with the walls, which may be ornamented with pictures, windows, &c., or otherwise decorated. I now provide a high infants chair-fthe rear legs 2 of which are several inches shorter than the front legs 1, and having a stout hook 3 rigidly attached to the rear edge of the seat 4. By means of this hook 3 the chair may be supported close to the screen or background, as the hook 3 is engaged with the cross-piece 9 of the frame.
By means of the above described apparatus a photographer may take the picture of a baby seated in the chair 4, and supported by a person concealed behind the ground 5,
and by removing a portion of the finished picture along the line Fig. 3, the chair has the appearance of standing upon the carpet 10 painted on the ground 5. The chair 4 may be formed if desired Without theback, and a representation of the said back painted upon the background, which would be found useful in some cases, or the back may be omitted altogether.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for photographers use consisting of a chair having the rear legs several inches shorter than the front, in combination with and attached toa supporting frame and back ground having a scene delineated thereon, whereby a certain photographic effect is produced, as described.
2. A back-ground for photographers use, having a scene delineated in perspective thereon, a hand opening formed through the said back-ground, in combination with a chair having shortened rear legs, and a means for supporting the said chair on the back-ground, substantially as and for the pu rpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto aiiix my signature this 6th day of February, A. D. 1893.
JAMES H.
In presence of- ALBERT J. WALKER, M. E. HARRISON.
