TOY WATCH SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,966, dated October 3, 1893.

To 01. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANoors SOUNAT, a citizen of the French Republic, residing in Cahors, (Lot,) in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Watches, (for which I have obtained a patent in France, No. 225,738, dated September 22, 1892;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth-- ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates toa new and useful improvement in scientific or toy watches and it consists in the combination in said watch of movable hands, mechanism for moving the same about the face or dial controlled from the stem of the watch together with the belt or band containing pictures, 850., wound upon rollers, and mechanism for winding or unwinding said band upon said rollers to expose at an opening in the rear case of the watch successive pictures on said band.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a face or front View of the watch; Fig. 2 a rear view of the same; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1, the front of the watch being removed to expose the operating mechanism. Figs. 4;, 5 and 6 are detail views of certain portions of the mechanism showing means for winding and unwinding the pictorial band on the rollers, and Fig. 7 is aface view of the pictorial band enlarged.
The hands of the Watch are operated from the stem CL of the watch through a spindle b passing through the center of the watch and having. its bearings in the plates or brackets c and 0' arranged Within the watch transversely to the said spindle. Keyed to this spindle b is a miter wheel k operating with its meshing wheel Zthe shaft upon which the hands of the watch are secured. Revolving in bearings in the brackets c and c are two rollers d and (2 upon which the pictorial band or ribbon is wound in the mannerhereinafter described. These rollers 61 and e are proc and adapted to be turned thereon by the spindle b to which it is secured. By this ar-' rangement when the plate m is turned in either direction the pinions g and t' are turned about the center pinion h and bring said pinion it into gear either with the pinionf operating the roller 61 or pinionj operating theroller e. The successive positions of the pinions g and t are shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The pictorial band is attached at each end to one roller and wound up thereon in such a manner that it may be wound up on one While unwinding from the other and vice versa. Its face is always exposed to a circular or square opening in the rear case of the watch.
When the stem at is turned for instance to the right, the hands are operated through the spindle b from left to right and the pinions g, and t' are moved by the plate m into the position shown at Fig. 5, in which the pinion t' meshes with the pinionj of roller e and the ribbon or band is wound upon said roller and unwound from roller 01. When the stem at is turned in the opposite direction the hands are turned from right to left and the pinions g and 2' occupy the position shown in Fig. 4, the pinion g meshing with pinionf of roller 61, being moved into said position by the plate m. The ribbonis then wound about the roller d and unwound from roller e. In this manner successive pictures, inscriptions or the like are exposed to view through recess or opening in the back of the watch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a toy watch, the combination of the crown and spindle, with the case having an opening therein, a pictorial band, rollers upon which said band is wound to expose its face to the opening in the case, and with intermediate gear pinions connecting said rollers to the spindle whereby the band may be wound upon either roller upon turning the crown and spindle, substantially as described.
2. In a toy watch, the combination of the case having an opening therein, brackets secured transversely Within said case, a spindle having a bearing in said brackets, a plate turning partly with said spindle and slotted to one of said brackets, rollers arranged at either end of said bracket, a pinion secured to each roller and adapted to turn the same, a series of intermediate meshing pinions adapted to be shifted by the spindle and plate into engagement alternately with pinion of each roller and to turn said roller, and I 5
