A. BJFAUNGE. DEVICE FOR PREVENTING BOILER INGRUSTATION.
No. 505,942. Patented Oct. 3, 1893.

STAT S ALBERT B. FAUNOE, or QUINCY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO O. E. WHITMORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHU- SETTS.
DEVICE'FOR PREVENTING BOILER INCRUSTATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,942, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed July 28, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. FAUNGE, a citizen of the United States. of America, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing BoilerIncrustation, of which the fol-j lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is an improved device for purifying feed water, the'object of the invention being to provide means for preventing scale and incrustation in steam boilers and the like.
The invention includes a feed water pipe or conduit provided in its interior with an electro positive plate and an electro negative plate and means for keeping the zinc and copper plates bright and clean.
I have illustrated the device in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, shows my invention partly in elevation and partly in section. Fig. 2, is a detail view of one of the plates of the cylinder.
In the drawings A, represents a cylinder or a portion of the feed water conduit formed of any suitable material, a, a being the portions of the feed water pipe leading into and from the cylinder respectively. Within the cylinder are located a series of zinc and copper plates, these being placed alternately and in The shape of these plates is shown more clearly in Fig. 2, which shows a plan view of one of them. From this figure it will be seen that the central portion is cut away to allow the passage of the water, and that aseries of projections b, are formed by grooves or recesses 0, extending toward the periphery of the plate. These plates preferably of zinc and copper as before stated are placed alternately, first a zinc and then a copper, within the cylinder or conduit, and produce a galvanic current tending to neutralize the scale forming impurities.
It is found in practice that the zinc and copper plates very soon become coated with mud, and that the magnets rust, thus impairing the action of the device. To prevent this, I have provided a supplemental chamber B, located at one end near the inlet pipe, this Serial No. 441,475. (No model.)
chamber being adapted to contain material for keeping the plates clean and bright. Any suitable material may be used, but I have adapted my device for utilizing potatoes for this purpose.
A valvef, is provided in the pipe connectin g thechamber B, with the cylinder, by means of which the passage of the disintegrated material and the juice thereof to the cylinder may be cut off when desired. A suitable cover 9, is provided at the top, and a drip cock h, for any waste products. A steam pipe '0', leads from the boiler or other source of supply it being providedwith a stop cook 70, by means of which the flow of steam may be cut ofi when desired. The potatoes for making the cleansing fluid are placed in the receptacle and there cooked to form the said fluid which is then allowed to pass into the cylinder, where after acting upon the points of the plates of electro positive and electro negative metal by contact with said points of the plates, it passes into the boiler with the feed water.
AS before stated the electro positive and electro negative plates are arranged directly in contact and alternately first a positive plate, and then a negative one. The action of the device is substantially the same in effect as that mentioned in the patent to Faunce and Oabell, No. 438,579, dated October 14, 1890, butin the present case by arranging the plates in contact I am enabled to secure the galvanic action without the use of outside electrical connections and the battery shown in said patent. The cleansing fluid as before Stated acts by direct contact upon the points of the plates.
I prefer to use the connection X between the feed water pipe section a, and the receptacle, valves being provided at y, 'y', so that the entire supply or only a portion of the feed wateris caused to pass through the receptacle.
The cylinder mentioned herein may be of any suitable form and may consist of a portion of the feed water pipe or conduit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination, the feed water pipe, the cylinder A, connected therewith and adapted for connection with the boiler, the electro positive and electro negative elements, in said cylinder, a supplemental chamber connected with the cylinder, a valve controlling the passage between the two, a pipe leading from the supplemental chamber to a steam supply, and a valve for controlling said steam supply, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the feed water pipe, the cylinder A, connected therewith and adapted for connection, with the boiler, the electro positive and electro negative elements in the cylinder the receptacle connected with the said cylinder, the steam pipe connected with the receptacle and the branch pipe extending between the feed water pipe and the receptacle, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the feed Water pipe, the cylinder connected therewith, and adapted for connection with the boiler, the electro positive and electro negative elements in the cylinder, the receptacle connected with the cylinder and the steam pipe connecting with the receptacle, substantially as described.
4. In combination, the feed water pipe, the
cylinder connected therewith and adapted for connection with the boiler, electro positive and electro negative elements therein, the receptacle connected with the cylinder, the steam pipe connecting-with the receptacle, the branch pipe between the receptacle and the feed Water pipe a valve in said branch and a second valve for controlling the inlet of water from the feed water pipe to the cylinder arranged in said feed water pipe, substantially as described.
5. In combination, the cylinder having the electro positive and electro negative elements, the feed Water pipe and the supplemental chamber connected with the cylinder and the feed water pipe, said cylinder being adapted for connection with the boiler, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix mysignatu re in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT B. FAUNOE.
