FRAME FOR PICTURES OR CARDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,872, dated October 3, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatl, HENRY BIEDERMAN, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New Y0rk,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Pictures or Cards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has reference to improveto ments in frames for pictures, photographs,

cards, &c., and the invention consists of a frame composed of a back-plate, a front-plate provided with a display-opening for exhibiting the picture or card, and flexible flaps placed between the said plates and having the portions projecting beyond the edges of the opening in the front-plate bent back and fastened to the plates by means of cords or any other devices. The frame has a highly 2o attractive appearance and displays the picture in a more striking manner than any other frame.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1- represents a front-view of my improved frame 2 5 for pictures, &c, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the frame.

A in the drawings is the back-plate of the 0 frame which is provided with a slit a, as usual in frames for photographs, and B is the frontplate which is provided with the display-opening for the picture or card and placed upon the back plate. Both plates are made of 5 card-board, celluloid, or any other suitable stiff material. 0 C represent flaps of flexible material, the widths of which correspond with the lengths of the respective edges of the display-opening in the front-plate. The flaps have holes 0 c and are placed between the back and front-plates so that they project with the portions 0 beyond the edges of the display-opening in the front-plate. These portions 0' may beV shaped, as shown in the 5 drawings, or they may be rounded ofi or orbetween the said plates and the portions 0 are bent back, as shown in Fig. 2.

When the flaps O are in the position between the back plate and the front-plate, the portions C of the flaps are bent back and cords or wires D are drawn through the holes a, b, and c of the flaps and plates respect-- ively and tied together, whereby the flaps are reliably attached to the back and front-plates. To the cords or wires D buttons or tassels may be attached, which serve as ornaments for the frame.

Instead of the cords or wires, staples or eyelets may be used to fasten the flaps to the back and front-plates. In this case the holes a, b, and c are dispensed with. The frontplate and the flaps may be of different colors, whereby the frame is rendered highly ornamentive and receives a very attractive appearance. If desired, a glass-plate can be placed between the plates. The picture, photograph, or card is pushed through the slit a into the frame between the back-plate A and the flaps C and exposed in the display opening of the front-plate.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. In a frame for pictures, and cards, the combination of a back-plate, a front-plate having a display-opening, and flaps placed between the back and front-plates and bent back with their projecting portions beyond the edges of the display-opening of the frontplate, su bstantially as set forth.

2. In a frame for pictures, and cards, the combination of a back-plate, a front-plate having a display-opening, flaps placed between the back and front-plates and bent back with the portions projecting beyond the edges of the display-opening of the front-plate, and fastening devices by whichthe flaps are attached to the back and front-plates, substantially as set forth.

3.
