A 7TORNEZV UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
RICHARD BOAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COVER FOR POTS, URNS, JUGS, etc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,647, dated September 26, 18931.
Application filed May 2, 1893. Serial No. 472,812. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:.
Be it known that I, RICHARD BoAs, residin gin the city, county, and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Covers for Pots, Urns, Jugs, Kettles, Cans, Jars, or other Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in covers for pots, urns, jugs, kettles, cans, jars, or other utensils by which the cover is kept intact upon the utensil by means of a button connected with a spring attachedto the" annular ring of the cover and pressing against the inner surface of the utensil.
The object of myimprovement is to provide a new method for keeping covers in position upon utensils. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which Figure 1 is a side View partly in section on line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of the cover, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed section.
Similar letters referto si milarparts through out the several views. a
In the drawings A is the lid proper, B the annular ring and Ca spring receptacle attached to or connected with the ring. A spring d is set in the spring receptacle and is kept in position at one end by the shank e and terminates at the other end with a spring button 0' which extends slightly beyond the outer side of the ring B.
This being the mechanism of my improvement, its operation is as follows: When the cover or lid A is placed upon the utensil the spring button G is pressed against the inner surface of the utensil, and the cover or lid is thus held in position.
I do not intend to limit myself to any particular materials out of which to construct the several parts of my invention.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In combinations with a jar or similar receptacle having a mouth provided with a smooth interior surface, a cover for the same comprising a top plate, a chamber connected thereto, a bolt provided with a beveled end in said chamber, and a spring between the bolt and the wall of the chamber whereby the bolt is normally pressed outward; substantially as described.
2. In combinations with a jar or similar receptacle having a mouth provided with a smooth interior surface, a cover for the same comprising a top plate, a chamber connected thereto, a shank extending through said chamber, a hemispherical head carried by said shank, and a spring between the head and the wall of the chamber whereby the head is normally pressed outward; substantially as described.
RICHARD BOAS.
