Description

A 1. D. BROWNE.
Broom Head.
No. 50,554.` v Pat'ented'ch 24, 1865.
N. PEYERS. Prwwumagnpmr, wnshingmn, D. CA
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN DAVID BROWNE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BROOM-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 50,5511, dated October 24, 1865.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DAVID BROWNE, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton 'and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Clamps for Brooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of the part of the clamp to which the handle is attached. Fig. 2 is a view of the part for fastening the clamp. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the handle part of clamp. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the fastening part of clamp. Fig. 5 is a horizontal View of clamp. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clamp.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several ligures.
The nature of my invention consists in the mode ot' fixing the handle and securing the clamps.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my improvements, I will proceed to describe them.
The clamp is made in two parts, A and B, as shown in Figs. l and 2, of lnalleableiron or other suitable material, jointed at a. a. The part A is made with a socket, b, on the inside Y of which is a sharp threaded screw, c, which may be formed as shown or with a dry sand core. The part B is made so as to extend to the top and over the socket b, forming a ring or yoke, d, for the handle to pass through, the handle e to be made pointed, as shown, the point to be sufficiently long to enter the filling.
Operation: Open the clamp at about right angles, place the part A which has the screw in it downward, lay in the material for the broom, then close the clamp, and the yoke d will pass over the socketb. Nowinsert the handle and turn it round and the screw c will cut a thread on the handle, which will hold it very iirm and fasten the clamp at the same time, and the tllling is also further compressed and secured by the insertion of the point of the handle into it. f
This method dispenses with the use of separate screws, nuts, pins, buttons, ferrules, 8m., as hitherto used.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe mode ot' attaching the handle, and also securely fastening the clamp, as herein substantially set forth.
JOHN DAVID BROVVNE.
