SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,386, dated SeptemberV 19, 1893.

Be it known that I, JOHN E. BOZELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elwood, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked hereon, which form a part of'this specificalon.

Thisinvention relates to improvements in catches which are used to secure the doors of cupboards and like structures and it consists in providing the cross-bar or shelf of the cupboard with a fixture having a spring with which a swinging latch is adapted to engage, said latch being carried by one of the doors adjacent to the edge of the vsame and has an extended portion which is adapted to hold the latch in a position to engage the spring catch; the doors of the cupboard having beveled edges so that the door provided with the latch will hold the other one closed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a sectional view of a latch constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line oc-x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the front edge of the catch carried by the shelf.

A and A designate the swinging doors, which are beveled at their meeting edges, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the door A will keep the door A closed when in contact therewith..

B designates a shelf or cross-bar provided with a fixture h, which is cut away on its front and lower side to receive the hook portion of the latch. This fixture or plate, b, has a spring bar b secured thereto by passing the terminal portions of the same between the fixture and the shelf. This spring bar is provided with coils near each end from which eX`- tend the side pieces, which are connected at the front end of the fixture by a cross-bar b2, and with this cross-bar the latch carried by the door engages.'

portion of the spindle has formed thereon a shoulder beyond which is a catch portion which is adapted to engage with the cross-bar b2 of the spring catch to elevate the same, and from said catch portion extends a gravity arm C of sufficient length and Weight to hold the catch portion in the proper position to engage the spring bar b. The catch portion of the latch is provided with a recessclwithin which the cross-bar of the spring catch b lies when the parts are in engagement.

In practice the latch may be set at such a distance from the edge of the doorA that the gravity tail C will not engage with the other door; but if preferred it may be set nearer the edge so that the tail will engage with the other door, so that when the latch is turned in one direction it will open both doors simultaneously, and when turned in the other direction will only open the door to which it is attached. It will also be noted that when the knob ris turned the catch portion of the latch will elevate the spring so that it will be released therefrom.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A door fastener or latch for cupboards and like articles of furniture, consisting of a spindle having formed integral therewith a catch portion and an extension which is adapted to hold the catch portion in an operative position, a knob attached to the spindle for turning the latch, and a spring bar carried by the cross-bar or shelf with which the catch portion of the latch is adapted to engage, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a latch a fixture b containing a spring having side members and a connecting bar, of a latch consisting' of a catch portion or hook having a recess ct, said catch portion or hook being extended to form a gravity tail C', and a spindle C which passes through the door A and is provided with a knob, for the purpose set forth.
