SPlNDLE-RETAINING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,173, dated September 19, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES H. NORTHROP, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Spindle-Retaining Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speci fication, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
It is customary to provide supporting cases to contain the bolster bearings for spindles with oil supplying reservoirs, and the most common form is to provide the case with a horizontal arm, from the end of which is a nearly vertical extension, said extension being commonly provided with a detachable cap or cover. In this class of supporting case, the horizontal arm is also provided with a threaded hole, into which is screwed the threaded end of an "l-shaped wire, the bent upper end of which is turned when the spindle is in place to overlap a part of the whirl and prevent the spindle from being lifted from its bearings when the bobbins are being doffed from the spindles in usual manner. When the spindle is to be removed for any reason, the 'l-shaped wire has to be turn ed by a wrench or spanner made for the purpose, which requires time, and so also the cap referred to to cover the upright oiling leg is liable to be mislaid or lost.
I have aimed to improve the spindle supporting case in such manner that the spindle may be kept down when doffing and so that the oil leg or reservoir will not be left uncovered, and I have effected my object by adding to the supporting case arocker, it being adapted to turn about a center substantially parallel with or coincident to the center of the horizontal part of the oil reservoir referred to, a part of said rocker overlapping a projection on the spindle to obviate lifting the spindle during dotting, and another partof the rocker acting to cover the oil hole in the oil reservoir so as to exclude dust therefrom. In my invention I have also provided the rocker with a counterbalance located below the whirl.

The rocker has a finger a, which when the rocker is in its normal position, overlaps a portion of the whirl O and prevents the lifting of the bobbin during the operation of dotting, and the said rocker is so shaped that it carries a reservoir closing portion a, which when the rocker is in normal position closes the oil hole through which the oil is introduced into the reservoir to go to the spindle bearing. The portion marked D is made sumciently heavy to con stitute a counter-balance to normally keep the finger act the rocker in position over the whirl, and to keep the projection a. of the reservoir closing end a, of the rocker, see Fig. 3, against the upright B said projection 0. serving as a stop to limit the extent of movement of the rocker in one direction.
In the modification Fig. 4:, E represents the spindle rail, F the supporting case mounted thereon, G the spindle, and G the sleeve whirl connected thereto. In this modification I have shown the lower end of the whirl as provided with a plunger 79 which in practice meets the finger b forming part of the rocker 22 when the bobbins are being doffed from the spindles. The rocker b has an oil hole 29 and a counter-balancing weight 19 which normally keeps the rocker in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, wherein it will be seen that the oil hole in the rocker is kept at one side of the open mouth 0 of the oil reservoir consisting of the arm or tube H extended horizontally from the supporting case and having an oil chamber such as H, the shape of which is represented by dotted lines in Fig. 4. The rocker b is notched near its outer end as at e to cooperate with a pin 6 fixed to the horizontally extended arm H, the said pin and slot limiting the extent of rocking motion of the rocker when uncovering the mouth of the oil reservoir or that portion of the oil reservoir where the oil is poured in, and also acting as a stop to prevent the too great movement of the rocker due to the weighted portion or counter-balance b". By mounting the rocker upon a horizontal pivot below the whirl I am enabled to place the end of the finger closer to the projection which co-operates with the finger, to obviate lifting of the spindle during doffing, than if the support for the rocker were arranged at right angles to the arm H.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A spindle supporting-case and a horizontally extended arm to constitute part of an oil reservoir, combined with a rocker having its center of motion substantially parallel to or coincident with the said arm, the said rocker having a finger to co-operate with a projection of a spindle to prevent the lifting of the spindle during the operation of doffing, substantially as described.
2. A spindle supporting-case and a horizontally extended arm to constitute part of an oil reservoir, combined with a rocker having its center of motion substantially parallel to or coincident with the said arm, the said rocker having a finger to co-operate with a projection of a spindle to prevent the lifting of the spindle during the operation of doffing, and also having a portion to cover the oil hole leading into the oil reservoir when the finger referred to is in operative position with relation to the projection on the spindle, substantially as described.
3. A spindle supporting-case and a horizontally extended arm to constitute part of an oil reservoir, combined with a rocker having its center of motion substantially parallel to or coincident with the said arm, the said rocker having a finger to co-operate with a projection of a spindle to prevent the lifting of the spindle during the operation of doffing, said rocker also having a counter-balance to normally keep the fingerin operative position, and a stop to limit the movement of the rocker, substantially as described.
4:. A spindle supporting-case and a horizon tally extended arm to constitute part of an oil reservoir, combined with a rocker having its center of motion substantially parallel to or coincident with the said arm, the said rocker having a portion to cover the oil hole leading into the oil reservoir when the finger referred to is in operative position with relation to the projection on the spindle, substantially as described.
