Description
UNITED STATES' HORATIO J. HEWITT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINATION IN RULING AND PRINTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,475, dated October 17, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HoRA'rIo J. HEWITT, ot' Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Gombined Ruling and Printing Machine; and I do hereby declare the same is fully described and represented in the following' specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top View; Fig. 2, a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved method of attaching to a printing'- press a rulingmachine, so that the hitherto distinct operations ot' ruling and printing may by means of my invention be performed at one and the same operation, thereby dispensing with one-halt' the labor and expense usually attendant on runningsepara-tely the ruling and printing machines.
In the drawings, A is the driving-shaft with its crank B.
C is the cylinder on which is placed the paper to be ruled and printed on at the same operation.
D is a conductor or framework, with ribs E E, 85o., for keeping the paper to be ruled and printed on in contact with the cylinder.
F represents the movable bed or platform, on which is placed the form of type Gr.
H is the pen-plate with its pens I I, Src., into which the ruling-ink is conveyed from an absorbent or woolen cloth, in the ordinary man- -ner ot'ruling-machines; and J isthe plate-holder with its set-screws k k, 8mo.
From the above itwill be seen that when the cylinder is in revolutionand a sheet of paper (to be ruled and printed on)is placed on or I'ed to the cylinder, said sheet will pass under the ruling-pens and conductor or frame-Work, and between said cylinder, conductor, and i'orm ot' type, thus performing the parts of ruling and printing at one and the same time, and bythe same operation with much more expedition and mucli less expense than when a separate and distinct ruling-machine and printing-press are used for separate purposes.
It will be observed that if the lines are near together the ribs ot' the conductor, it wide bands, such as heretofore always been used in cylinder presses, are employed, they would instantly det'ace or rub out the marks just made by the ruling-pelis. 'Io obviate that I employ for ribs wire ot' convenient size, which will allow a fresh-inked line to pass on each side without cont-act with the rio.
,What I claim, and desire to secure by.Let ters Patent, is
The combination, of cylinder C, conductor D, movable bed F, and pen-plate H, or their several equivalents, constructed and operating together, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth;
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
HORAII() J. HEWIT'I. W'itnesses:
A. NEILL, EDWD. PAYsoN.
