HEADLIGHT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,214, dated August 29, 1893.
Application filed April 5, 1893- Serial No. 469,091- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. HAND- LAN, J r., of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Headlights, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for head-lights, more particularly intended for street-car use, but which may be used for other purposes; and the object of my invention is to provide for the easy and ready attachment and detachment of a colored lens or bulls-eye to the face of the head-light, so that any desired color of signal may be given by the use only of the lamp of the head-light; or, by removing the lens or bulls-eye, the head-lighs can be used Without any signal.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a front elevation of a head-light provided with my attachment. Fig. II is an enlarged, detail, top View, showing part of the head-light, and the attachment. Fig. III is an enlarged detail elevation, showing part of the head-light and the attachment with the lens removed. Fig. IV is an enlarged, vertical section, taken on line IV-IV, Fig.1.
Referring to the drawings,1 represents the case of the head-light, having the usual rim 2, and glass 3.
Secured to the rim 2 and projecting in front of the glass 3 is a holder 4, consisting, preferably, of a ring 5 secured to the rim.2, by means of wings 6. The ring 5 has pins or projections 7.
8 represents a colored lens or bulls-eye, having the usual flange or collar 9, in which it is held. The collar or flange 9 is adapted to fit over the ring 5, as shown in Fig. IV, and the flange or collar has bayonet slots 10 for engaging the pins 7, and has also a spring catch 11 for engaging one of the pins when the lens has been adjusted to its position. The pins 7, slots 10, and spring 11 form the usual bayonet joint attachment. The holder 4 is permanently attached to the head-light, and the lens or bulls-eye being removably attached to the holder, any desired color of lens may be readily and quickly applied, or the head-light may be used without any lens.
The head-light is well adapted for streetcar use; and a company operating more than one road, having difierent signal colors, or a company operating a road having a number of branches with different signal colors, can use the head-lights for the different branches, or different roads, by simply placing the proper colored lens onto the head-light.
The attachment is very inexpensive, and when it is desired to use the head-lights without displaying a colored signal, the holder does not interfere with the proper working of the head-light.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a headlight having a ring 2 and a glass 3 of a holder 4 consisting of a ring 5 having wings 6, and the collar 9 fitted on the ring of the holder, and a lens 8; substantially as described.
2. A headlight attachment consisting of the holder 4 having a ring 5 provided with wings 6 and the pins 7, and the collar 9 having bayonet-slots 10, the spring catch 11, and a lens 8, substantially as described.
