IMPROVED CORD FOR WINDOW-SASH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,405, dated October 10, 1865.

To all whom 'it 'may concern:

Be it known that 1, SIGOUENEY WALES, of Boston, in the county of Sul'olk and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful Invention having reference to the Cords of Window-Sash NVeights; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specication and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures l, 2, and 3 exhibit front, rear, and side views `of my invention and its application to the knot of a cord of a window-sash Weight.

In the application of the balancing-Weight cord to a Window-sash it has been customary to bore with an auger or bit a round cavityin the edge of the sash,and afterward to form in such edge a groove to lead out of such cavity and to the upper edge of the sash. A knot made at one end of the Weightcord, being inserted Within the cavity, caused a part of the cord to enter the groove. The knot, under such circumstances and under the pressure of the Weight and the sash, is apt either to become iammed into the groove or untied or drawn through it.

To prevent these evils or accidents I combine with the cord and its knota wire twisted in a helix and encircling the knot and receiving the cord between tivo coils of the helix, the same being as represented in the drawings,in which C is the Weight-cord, or a part thereof, b its knot, and A the helix of wire.

In order that the coil covering the cord may fit thereto, Iform such coil with a lateral bend or arch, as shown at c in Fig. 3. This arch, by straddling the cord, aids in holding the helix firmly thereon. Thehelix, thus made and applied to the cord and its knot, not only will prevent the cord from becomingjammed into the grooves or untied, but also protects it from Wear, and has been found in practice to be of much value and utility.

I claim as my invention- 1. The arrangement and combination of the Wire helix A with the sash-Weight cord C and its knot b, substantially as described.

2. The wire helix A, as made With the arch or bend cto span the cord above its knot when applied there-to, as specified.
