Description

" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT Il. DORSEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE TUCKER do DORSEY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
KRAUT-CUTTER;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,697, dated August 22, 1893. Application inea January 24., 1893. serai No. 459,528. or@ man.)
.To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. DoRsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain-'new and useful Improvements in Kraut- Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a means whereby the knives of vegerc table cutters, more especially that sort known as krant cutters, may be rendered adjustable, and thus adapted to be set to cut slices or parts of varying thickness.
It principally consists in a rocker-like form I 5 of bearings upon which the knives are mounted 5 and it further consists in details of construction and arrangements of parts, as willbe hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure lis a perspective view of a krant cutter embodying my said invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 a detail or fragmentary view, partly in top plan and partly in section, on an enlarged scale; Fig.4 a detail sectional View, on a still further enlarged scale, through the frame, 3o knife bearing and an end of a knife, on the dotted line 4 4 in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a similar view, on the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of one of the rocker-shaped bearings.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the base or bottom board of the machine; B the side pieces thereto; C the box which, in operation, contains the vegetables to be cut; D the cutting knives; E the 4o rockershaped bearings upon which said knives are mounted, and F bolts by which the knives and bearings are secured in place.
As above stated, this machine in its general form is similar in most respects to, those already well known; and the operation is, the knives being set at the desired inclination, the vegetables to be cut are placed in the box,
which runs in ways in the side-pieces, and is thus passed back and forth over said knives until cut or sliced ready for use.
The knives D, instead of being secured directly to the frame-work as is usual, are mounted upon the rocker-shaped bearings E. They extend across the machine, as is usual, and as shown, and are provided with strength- 5 5 ening ribsd at or near the rear sides, the front o edges being tapered to a sharp edge. Said knives are capable of being removed at pleasure for sharpening or otherwise, and replaced, as desired, without dismembering the struct- 6o ure of the implement.
The rocker-shaped bearings E are mounted in corresponding recesses in the side-pieces B, and may be shifted in said recesses to any desired extent, as will be clearly understood by an examination of the drawings, partielllarly Fig. 4i. As also shown in said igure, these bearings are slotted centrally to receive the attaching bolt, and are thus adapted to be moved as desired without moving said bolt. 7o
The bolts E are preferably ordinary stove bolts, and pass through the ends of the knives, therocker-shaped bearing-pieces and that portion of the side pieces Bbelow them, and upon the outer end are provided with washers b and wing-nutsf, as shown.
The operation is, when it is desired to adjust the knives, that lthe wing-nuts are loosened, the rocker-shaped bearings shifted upon their seats and adjusted to the desired posi- 8o tion, and the wing-nuts are again tightened, when the machine is again in position for use.` By means of my invention an extremely simv ple and thoroughly durable means of adjustment is provided, and which can be easily and quickly manipulated.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in a vegetable cutter, 9o of the frame-work, the cutting knives, rockershaped bearing pieces seated in the framework upon wliich the knives are secured, and bolts connecting the knives and the framework and holding them onto the iat surfaces of said bearing pieces, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a vegetable cutter, of the-frame-work, the cutting knives, centrally-slotted rocker-shaped bearing pieces for said knives, and.l bolts passing through and bolts or screws whereby the parts are sev the knives the be'aring-pieces aud-a portion cured together, substantially as set forth.
of the frame-Work, whereby the said several In witness whereof I have hereunto set tn y parts are firmly secured together. l hand and seal, at Indianapolls, Indian a, this 5 fhThfe com binaliofntin a. vegetalole cutter, l 20th day of January, A. D. 1893.
