To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON AKER, a citizen .Of the United States, and a resident of the city of Helena, county of Lewis and Clarke, State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Application and Transmission of Lever-Power, of which the following is a specification.
It has always been an obstacle to miners of small means, that, in general, as soon as a mining shaft reached any considerable depth, they were embarrassed by the appearance of water in considerable quantity and poor ventilation, with which difficulties they could cope only by the use of costly machinery, often far beyond their means, and thus many promising prospects have been abandoned for lack of means to secure the expensive machinery.
Myinvention is intended to supply a cheap but substantial means of utilizing horse or 1ever power to the best advantage in working a pump or ventilating blower, or both, and is intended to be used in conjunction with a whim operated by the same lever or levers;
being simple in construction and having no complicated parts, it can be taken to and operated at points remote from machine shops, without fear of possibly needing expensive repairs of skilled workmanship.
It consists in the ordinary sweep, carrying at its base a hub, fitted with two sets of spokes, an upper and short set, alternating with a lower and longer set, in combination with a rock shaft, one end of which is suspended above this spoked hub, and having twoarms, one of which reaches the short spokes on one side of the hub, and the other the long spokes on the opposite side; which arms are alternately pushed back and forth as the hub revolves, thus tilting the shaft back and forth, which motion is utilized at the other end of the shaft by means of short arms working a pump or blower, or both.

The long arm A works freely upon the upright pivot shaft B. Fixed upon the arm A Q at the point where the pivot shaft B passes through it, is the hub or wheel C, through the center of which the shaft B passes freely. To this hub 'O. are attached eight or more short spokes of wood or metal, one half of which 0 0 (each alternate one) are longer than the other half 0 c and are fixed several inches lower on thehub. The set of spokes cc have threaded ends, screwing into threaded holes in the hub O. The set 0 c are shown, attached to the upper side of the hub, but may be secured in same manner as the set 0 c. The length of these spokes will vary with circumstances, such as the room available and the power wanted. Above this spoked wheel is one end of a long beam or shaft D through which the power is communicated to the pump or blower ator near its other end. This shaft is supported by iron gudgeons K, fixed in its ends,
working freely in bearings, Z, upon the walls of the building, or proper supports. This shaft has two fiat sides parallel to each other, and firmly fastened upon these flat sides of the shaft D are the iron frames F F, one upon eachside, consisting of the plain pieces F F and the braces F F and extending from the shaft to within a short distance of the spokes, uponopposite sides of the hub. The lower ends of these frame pieces F F are bent at right angles and, through holes m in the steps ff, pass two metal rods G and G supported at their upper ends by bearings g and g on the shaft D, and held in place by strong springs g on the frame pieces F. When in use, the rod G is lowered so as to come in contact with the spokes c, and the rod G so as to come in contact withthe spokes a near the outer ends of said spokes. Upon the other end of the shaft D are two short arms (I and e, at right angles to the shaft, and upon opposite sides of'it; the arm 61 may be attached to the plunger rod of a pump, having a knuckle joint; and the arm e may be attached to the mechanism of a ventilator. so adjusted, that, at the moment the rod G,

Having thus described my invention, its
mode of operation is as follows: The horse or' other power, such as is needed, is attached to one or more arms A; the hub O, revolving at the same rate, carries the two sets of spokes ,0 and 0 these alternately catch the ends of the rods G and G tilting the shaft D back and forth, which motion is utilized at the-other end of the shaft D by the arms at and e as before described. The power first exerted is concentrated; first,in theratio of the lengthot the arm Ato the length of the spokes c and o ,'and, again by the ratio of the length of the rods G and G to the length of the arms (1 and e, and these parts can be so constructed as to utilize the available power to the best advantage. Again, the spokes are so fitted into the hub O as to be easily removable; thus, increasing or decreasing the number of oscillations of the shaft D. By decreasing the number of spokes 0 but may be used with any power, and applied and lowering the rods G and G the stroke of t the arms 01 and 6 will be increased in length i but decreased in number; while by increasing the number of spokes and raising the rods G and G the stroke of the arms will:be increased in number, but diminished in length. It is readily seen that in certain cases it might be well to use more than one power arm;- and that this method of transmitting power, is not confined to horse draft power,
to any purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a sweep, of a hub or wheel, fixed thereto at the pivot, carrying two sets of spokes one above and shorter, and alternating with, the other, and a rockshaft, having two arms, acted upon by said spokes, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a hub or wheel carrying two sets of spokes, one above and shorter, and alternating with the other, of mechanical means to revolve said wheel, and
