ALBERT REED, OF OROVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR TRANSMITTING POWER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,674, dated October 6, 1874; application filed August 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT REED, of Oroville, in the county of Butteand State of California, have invented .a new and Improved Machinefor Transmitting Power, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved machinefor transmitting power 5 Fig. 2, an end view, and Fig. 3 avertical transverse section, of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the transmission of power for the purpose of working pumps, sawing machines, 860.; and the invention consists of suitable weighted, swinging, and regulating devices, which produce, when set to work, a uniform degree of motive 'power.
In the drawing, A and A represent strong front and rear frames for supporting the various operating devices. The front frame, A, is provided with a centrally pivoted lateral frame, B, being operated by means of a weighted lever-arm, B and handle B The upward-extending part of frame B supports a pivoted elbow-lever, 0, to which is attached, at'the outermost end, a weight, 0, which increases the momentum of lever O, and transmits motion, by a link, D, to a centrally-fulorumed lever, B. The opposite end of lever E connects with a vertically swinging arm, F,
which is fulcrumed to the rear, frame A, and
connected rigidly, under right angles, with a top piece, F having friction -rollers F at their outer ends. The friction-rollers F support a pivoted carriage, G with concaved top part, which connects, by a downward-extending rigid arm, G with the lower end of a fulcrumed arm, G that is hung with its upper end to a horizontally-swinging top lever, H. The top lever H has a weight, H, at the rear end, and is supported on the concaved top of pivoted carriage G by a readily-turnin g friction-roller, H which increases, in connection with the swinging motion of the earriage, the power of the strokes of top lever H. The fulcrum of top lever H is secured on the upper part of the front frame A, the forward end of lever H being attached to cords L, which pass over suitable side and top pulleys of frame A to the ends of a centrallypivoted lateral lever, M, to which the pump or other machinery to be driven is attached.
By setting the operatinghandle in motion, the various parts are consecutively brought into active operation, until the final reciprocatin g motion of lever M is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of pivoted weighted levers
