CUP AND SAUCER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,508, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed April 11, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO WALTER, of Cologne-on-the-Rhine, in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improveinents in and Connected with Cups and Saucers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to cups and saucers for serving tea, coffee, and other beverages; and has for its object to provide a new and improved construction, whereby liability of the cup being upset when carried is avoided, and the bottom of the cup is supported in an elevated position above the inner surface of the saucer, so that if any of the contents of the cup spill into the saucer, the bottom of the cup will remain dry, and thus avoid the objectionable dripping therefrom when conveyed to the lips.
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the combination of a saucer having a perforated false bottom raised above the bottom surface of the saucer, and provided with a central orifice, and a cup having a surrounding shoulder to rest on the false bottom, and a contracted neck below the shoulder which enters the central orifice in the false bottom, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central side elevation of a cup and saucer constructed according to my i11- vention. Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of the saucer. Fig. 3 is a sectional View, showing a modified construction of saucer; and Fig. 4 is a broken plan view of the modified construction.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein the letter a indicates a cup provided at its bottom with a surrounding shoulder a, from which depends a circular contracted neck o which is of less diameter than the body of the cup, so that the contracted neck can enter the central orifice d, Fig. 2, of a false bottom I), which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is formed integral with the Serial No. 469,936. (No model.)
saucer d, and is elevated above the bottom j wall of the saucer in such manner that when the contracted neck of the cup is inserted into the central orifice d and the surrounding shoulder a rests upon the false bottom, the cup is suspended, and all parts of the contracted neck are held away from contact with the bottom wall of the saucer. The false bottom b is provided with a series of perforations b, which permit the passage of any fluid that may spill from the cup while the cup and saucer are being carried, as for instance in hotels, restaurants, and on board a ship. The false bottom is so constructed and arranged that the contracted neck of the cup is held a sufficient distance above the bottom wall of the saucer that any small quantity of fluid which may spill from the cup and enter the saucer will not come in contact with the contracted neck of the cup, or any other part thereof. The surrounding shoulder a serves to substantially support a cup, and by inserting the contracted neck into the central orifice of the false bottom the cup is not liable to upset while being carried. I prefer to form the saucer integral with the perforated false bottom, but as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the perforated false bottom 0 may be made separate from the saucer and supported in position by providing its outer edge with a flange o to rest on an annular shoulder 0 formed on the inner surface of the saucer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of a saucer having a perforated false bottom with a central orifice raised above the bottom wall of the saucer, and a cup having a surrounding shoulder to rest on the false bottom, and a contracted neck below the shoulder which enters the said central orifice, substantially as and for the purpose described.
