BERNARD T. REILLY, OF ASHLEY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MORRIS R. ZEHNDER, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 503,495, dated August 15, 1893.
Application led February 18,1893. Serial No. 462,894. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD T. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine-Brakes, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in machine brakes and more especially to brakes employed in connection with hoisting drums and similar machinery.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows in side elevation a hand brake with a brake operating mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail.
In operating machine brakes which are used on the hoisting drums of mine shafts and on other forms of heavy machinery it is desirable to use steam or air for the reason that considerable power is required and the brakes must be made to work quickly in order to stop the machinery with precision. It is also desirable to provide devices for operating the brake by hand in case the supply of steam or other motive Huid should give out, or in the event of an accident to the steam pipes or steam brake mechanism which would render the power brake inoperative.
My invention therefore consists in certain improvements in a hand operating device and its connections with a power operated brake. In the present instance a steam brake having an air cushion cylinder is illustrated in combination with my invention.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a steam cylinder and 2 the piston-rod of said cylinder which is connected to a cross-head 3. A pin 19 on the cross-head 3 is connected with the lever 4 of the brake device by a connecting rod 5, the brake device shown being in the present instance a band brake. The cylinder 1 receives steam through the pipes 6.
In order to regulate the movements of the steam piston and prevent it from slamming against the steam cylinder I connect the crosshead 3 with the piston 7 of an air cylinder 8, the ends of which are provided with suitable valves 9, 9, which control communication between the interior of the cylinder and the atmosphere. A hand operating lever 10 is connected to the power brake in such a manner that it may be brought into action in case of an emergency to put on the brake, While ordinarily it is not used and does not aiect the movements of the power brake. As shown, this lever is pivoted at a point 11 to the frame or bed plate 12 upon which the power brake rests. A fixed quadrant 13 having notches or teeth 14 is arranged to hold the lever 10 in any desired position, the lever being provided with a pawl 15 adapted to engage the notches in the quadrant. Connected to the lever 10 ata point 16 is a link 17 having a slot 18 through which passes a pin 19 which is fixed to the cross-head 3. The slot 18 is slightly greater in length than the throw of the cross head and the lever is normally set so that the pin 19 will run from end to end of the slot as the brake is operated by power without affecting the hand lever 10. Should the steam cylinder however fail to operate the lever it may be grasped and pulled rearward in the direction of the arrow, in which case the forward end 2O of the link 17 will engage the pin 19 and draw the cross-head back, thereby applying the brake. This operation is quite easily performed as the lever 10 is long and the pistons and cross-head comparatively small.
By the use of this invention the employment of steam or air brakes is rendered absolutely safe, inasmuch as the attendant can always apply the brake whether the steam works or not.
It desired the brake may be set by means of the steam cylinder and then locked in such position by the hand lever.
Then it is necessary to use the hand brake for any considerable period of time I connect the rod 17 to the pin 19 as shown in Fig. 3. In this figure, 21indicatesabearing block which is fastened within the slot 18 by a key 22, thus forming between the block and the end 2O a circular bearing for the pin. When the hand brake is not in use the block 2l may be shifted to the other end of: the slot 1S and fastened therein as shown in Fig. l.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa
l. The combination with a brake device,
IOO
and a power cylinder, piston and piston rod for applying `the brake, of a cross-head oonnected to the piston rod, an aroylinder having its piston rod also connected to the crosshead, a hand lever, a slotted link connected to the hand lever, a pin passing through the slot in the link `and connected to the cross-head, and a. toothed quadrant and detent for holding the hand lever in any desired position, Substantially as described.
2. The combination with e' brake device,
and a power cylinder, piston and piston rod presence of two witnesses.
