ROBERT P. ROSS, OF BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAGE-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,386, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed December 3.1892- Serial No. 453,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. Ross, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in gage cocks withaview to providing the valve face of the usually weighted handle with two or more removable packing strips which may be readily inserted or removed when necessary without in any manner disturbing the parts, opening the valve or removing the valve seat.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1, is a sectional view of a gage cock constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the same.
Referring to the drawings A represents a portion of the shell of the boiler or gage chamber; B a nipple or screw plug of the usual form adapted to be screwed into the shell of theboiler and having at one end ajet orifice b.
At or near the jet orifice b and on the upper side of the nipple B are two lugs C C of the form shown more clearly in Fig. 2, and adapted to these lugs are projecting arms 0 extending laterally from the headed end of a bolt C extending through the weighted handle D and provided at the outer end of said handle with a thumb nut F by means of which the Weighted handle D may be adjusted on the bolt.
The valve face of the handle D is provided with a transverse dove-tailed slot cl within which are held two packing stripsE E, which are entirely separated from each other and so placed within the slot d that they may be readily removed when worn and replaced with new packing strips.
In the drawings the packing strip E is being pressed into contact with the jet end of the nipple B while the packing strip E is in such position that it may be readily removed and replaced by a new strip without in any way effecting the movement of the valve; and, when the strip E is worn the weighted handleD may be lifted up and moved slightly toward the boiler so that the projecting arms a will be released from the lugs G permitting the handle to be turned over until the strip E assumes the position of the strip E. If desired, however, instead of removing the weighted handle D to reverse the position of the packing strips the thumb nut E may be loosened slightly and the weighted handle D turned on the bolt 0 as an axis.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a gage cook, a nipple having adischarge orifice, a rotatable weighted handle having a diametrically grooved valve face and adapted to be lifted, separately removable packing strips held in such groove and a bolt 0 extending through and supporting said weighted handle with supporting lugs C on said nipple adapted to engage with and hold the bolt in proper position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT P. ROSS.
