B. J. H. DB VRY! v DEVICE FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY MOVING DOUBLE nouns.
Patented Aug. 15, 189? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNHARD J. H. DE VRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY MOVING DOUBLE DOORS.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,361, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed March 20, 1893. Eerial No. 466,822. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNHARD J. H. DE VRY, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, haveinvented a new and use ful Improvement in Devices for Simultaneously Moving Double Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of folding doors in which each set of doors comprises two relatively sliding members co-operating to close the door-way when brought together and adapted to be separated, by sliding them apart, to open the door-way; and it relates, particularly, to connectingmeans provided on such doors, whereby movement of either member, in opening or closing it, is transmitted to the other, simultaneously to open or close it.
My object is materially to simplify the construction and improve the operation of the connecting-means referred to, and particularly the means for the purpose shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 376,946, dated January 24., 1888, with relation to which, especially, I desire to avoid the use of rack-bars and sprocketwheels, which are found, in practice, to be undesirable by reason of their great weight, and expense and the excessive friction they produce.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the upper portion of a pair of sliding doors with my improved device attached; and Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed inthe direction of the arrow.
A and A denote two sliding doors suspended, respectively, on carrier-bars B and B'- by the hangers '1", the bars resting on shafts q of wheels 0 which ride upon the rails p Above the respective doors A and A, are journaled, in the overhead casing, the pulleys D and D, each of which is provided with two parallel peripheral grooves; and a crossed cable D connects the two pulleys at correspondin g grooves therein.
E is a cable or wire fastened at one end to the upper end of the door A at 0, passed thence over a suitable stationary guide, as the pin 01., near the rear end of the carrier-bar B, and under and about the pulley D in the other groove from that containing the cable D and from the pulley D the cable E is passed over a stationary guide, as the pin it, near the forward end of the carrier-bar, to, and fastened at its opposite end at, 0, on the upper end of the door. The points 0 and 0, at which the ends of the cable E are fastened are preferably eyes having threaded stems to screw into the upper end of the door A, whereby any slack in the cable may be taken up by turning the eyes to drive their screw'stems the farther into the wood; and it is preferred, but not necessary, that the cable E be crossed, as shown, between the points 0 and o.
E is a cable or wire for the door A, arranged in all respects like the cable E for the door A. That is to say, it has one end fastened to the upper end of the door at 0 is passed thence over a suitable stationary guide, as the pin 02 near the rear end of the carrier-bar B, and about the pulley D in the other groove from that containing the cable D and from the pulley D the cable E is passed over a stationary guide, as the pin 01. near the forward end of the said carrier-bar, to, and fastened at its opposite end at, 0 on the upper end of the door. The parts 0 and 0 may be counterparts of the parts 0 and 0.
From the foregoing description of the mechanism the operation will be understood to be as follows: As illustrated the doors A and A are shown to be open or partly open. Obviously, if either door is pulledfto, the strain on the respective end of the cable E or E will revolve the adjacent pulley D or D in one direction, whereby, through the medium of the cross belt D the other pulley will be revolved in the opposite direction and cause the other door to be simultaneously pulled to; and if either doorbe pushed back, obviously, the connections will cause the other door to be simultaneously opened.
What I claini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for simultaneously moving double sliding doors, the combination with the doors of the double-grooved pulleys D and D having the crossed-belt connection D the carrier-bars B and B by which the doors are hung on the track 19, and cables E and E,
ends to the screw-eyes on the door A and passing over guides n and n about the pul- V ley D, and a cable E fastened at its opposite ends to the screw-eyes on the door A and passing over guides, n and n about the pulley D, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' BERNHARD J'. H. DE VRY. In presence of M. J. Fnosr, W. N. WILLIAMS.
