Description

(No Model.)
I F. ANDRE. WOOD PULP GRINDING MACHINE.
No. 503,304. AL 0 Patented Aug. 15, 189 3.
W s T04:
IT/vEss 1 m V Mf r E ren/ways.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH ANDRE, OF HILDESHEIM, GERMANY.
WOOD-PULP-GRINDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,304, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed April 22, 1893. serial No. 471,408. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I. FRIEDRICH ANDRE, a subject of the King of Prussia, and a resident of Hildesheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood- Pulp-Grinding Machines, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The horizontal wood pulp grinding machines used heretofore were so constructed and operated that the water, necessaryin the process of grinding, was conducted upon the upper surface of the stone and run outof the apparatus with the pulp ground off the block of wood. In machines of this kind, parts of pulp ground from the blocks are carried to the followingblock, and are there again ground and disintegrated whereby their fibrous nature is destroyed and the quality of the pulp is deteriorated.
In my improved wood pulp grinding machine, these difficulties are avoided by mounting the horizontal stone in such a manner that during the operation the same is entirely under water, and the particles of pulp, as soon as ground from the block, immediately rise to the surface of the Water and are carried off with the same. Much less water is used than with the old machines used heretofore which is a matter of considerable importance, especially where the water is scarce.
My improved apparatus can also readily be adjusted to operate in the same manner as ordinary grinding machines, in which the water is admitted at the top and runs olf at the bottom.
My invention further consists in providing the grinding-stone with means for lifting and lowering it on its vertical axis and thus permitting of using the stone until the same is almost entirely worn off.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of my improved wood pulp grinding machine. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
On the vertical rotative shaft 7 the grinding-stone s is supported. The same is surrounded by the water-tight compartment Z, provided with a closed bottom. In the top of said compartment, compressor boxes a a with their followers are arranged. The water is conducted to the grinding-stone through the pipes 11 b at the bottom or at any other part of the compartment Z the water rising to the 5 top of the grinding-stone so that the latter is at all times fully surrounded with water. The water and the pulp flow off through the pipe f at the top of the con'ipartinent Z. The pulp as soon as ground from the blocks rises to the surface of the water and passes off with the same through the pipe f. If the apparatus is to be operated in the usual manner, that is, the water conducted to the top, the pipes 11 b can be closed and the water is admitted through the pipe 0 at the top. The wood pulp and the water then pass to the bottom of the compartment Z and pass into the pipe e when the gated is raised. An iron ring rsupporting the grinding-stone rests on the bottom flange of a tube It surrounding the shaft \V. A set screw 19 is screwed through the top of said tube, its lower end resting on the upper end of said shaft W. By turning the screw 19 the tube h with the ring 0' and the grinding-stone s on the same can be raised, as the stone wears off.
The apparatus is also provided with a device for sharpening the grinding edges of the stone which consists of a box 0: containing an abrading substance or material which is pressed upon the stone by means of a suitable hand-wheel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 8 Patent-- 1. In a Wood pulp grinding machine, the combination, with a grinding-stone mounted to rotate in a horizontal plane, a compartment surrounding said grinding-stone, means for conducting Water into the bottom of the compartment and drawing it olf from the top, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wood pulp grinding machine, the combination, with agrinding-stone mounted to rotate in a horizontal plane, a compartment surrounding the stone, pressure-boxes and followers in the top of the compartment, an inlet for water at the bottom of the compartment, and an outlet for the water at the top of the compartment, substantially as set forth.
3. In. a wood pulp-grinding machine, the
combination, with a grinding stone mounted In witness whereof I have hereunto set my to rotate in a horizontal plane, a compartment hand in presence of two witnesses. surroundin the stone pressure boxes and 1w v '1 followers on the top of the compartment, and RIEDRHH ANDRE 5 inlets and outlets for the water both at the Witnesses:
top and bottom and a gate for controlling the ERNST BARNSTORF,
bottom water outlet, substantially as set forth. W. 13. MURPHY.
