RAILROAD-RAIL TIE AND CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,184, dated August 15, 1893.

Be it known that I, PHILLIP WHEELER, of Branchport, in the county of Yates, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad Rail Ties and Chairs, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to railroad rail ties and chairs and means for securing the rail removably thereon.

My object is to produce a railroad rail tie and chair combined, by which I am enabled to seat the rail quickly, firmly and securely; cheap, durable in construction and of great utility.

My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereto annexed.

Itis constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1, is a view of my combined tie and rail chair complete, showing a portion of the rail therein. Fig. 2, is an enlarged view of one end of a rail tie and seat. Fig. 3, is an end view of the construction shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a view of the seat, complete, forming part of the rail chair, detached. Fig. 5, is a View of the shims, detached.

A, is a tie constructed preferably of metal, as shown and having a bottom -1- and up turned edges 2-.

3-, are side pieces adapted to be secured to the side of the tie, as shown and extending up above the edges thereof, and is provided with a recess --cr extending beyond the side, as shown at b-, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

. 4-, are lips extending out into th e mouth of the recess a and having their lower edges cadapted to fit over the upper face of the flange -5 of the rail -B-.

6-7, constitute shims, -6 lying within the tie, having bolts -8- passing through it, the side of the tie, and the side plate 3-, by which bolts the parts above named are secured rigidly together and to each other. The shim .7 has its lower face inclined so that it may be interposed between the shim -6- and the bottom of the rail, and then driven until the lips -4 clutch and securely hold the rail by the flanges, as shown in the drawings. The small recess --ballows the flange of the rail to extend into it, when the rail is turned edgewise, for the purpose of getting it within the recess a in the side plate 3-. When the shim 7 is driven home and the rail tightly clamped a spike 8 may be placed in the upper end of the shim next to the flange of the rail to prevent its working out and becoming loose.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination with a tie, and the side plates -3' having recesses a and -btherein, inwardly projecting lips upon the upper face, means for securing said plates to the tie, and the shim interposed between it and the bottom of the rail, as described.
