Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH OANNEY, OF BUTTE CITY, MONTANA.
NIPPLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,224, dated July 25, 1893.
Application filed February 20, 1893. Serial No. 463,125. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OANNEY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Butte City, Silver Bow county, State of Montana, have invented an Improvement in Nipple- Holders; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invent-i011 relates to the general class of screw-thread cutting appliances and partialilarly to the sub-class of holders for retaining the work being operated upon.
It consists in the novel holder for cutting right and left close nipples, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective holder for close nipples upon which right and left threads are to be cut.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my complete holder showing the nipple in place. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line x-cc of Fig. 1.
A is a hollow stock, having in one end a shouldered socket a provided with internal threads, the directionof which is, say, righthanded, and at the other end a shouldered socket c', with internal threads, left handed.
B is a rod fitted to and passing through the stock. It may be prevented from turning in the stock in any suitable way, the preferable means being to make the parts other. than round, as, for example, as here shown, oblong in cross section. The rod may also be prevented from moving endwise in the stock in any suitable way, as by a nut or head on the end, not in immediate use, or, as here shown, by cross pins C, passing through stock and rod, and in this case, in order to avoid the weakening tendency of the holes, the rod, at its middle portion is made heavier as shown. The ends of the rod may be reduced and that portion which projects from the stock ends is eXteriorly threaded as shown. The threads b are left-handed, and those b are right handed, being the reverse of the threads in the sockets a and d of the stock, at corresponding ends.
D and D are holding nuts seated upon the ends of the rod B. They may be provided with shoulders d and d to bear on the outer ends of the nipples and to avoid the dies.
The use of the device is as follows:-It is a double ender, but the description of the operation at one end will suffice. Take a pipe with a right hand thread cut upon one end of it, and cut it off the length of the desired nipple. Screw this nipple, represented by E into the right hand threaded socket a of the stock.` The end of rod B passes through and projects beyond the nipple. Then screw the left handed nut D on the end of rod B up against the outer end of the nipple. Now cut upon the outer end of the nipple, a left hand thread. The force applied in cutting this left hand thread, will unscrew, or tend so to do, the nipple out of socket d, and will thus cause its outer end to bear against nut D, and thisimpingement upon the left handed nut, Willtend to screw said nut up tighter againsty the nipple, thus etfectually holding it.
The same operation for cutting a right hand thread may be carried out at the other end of the device.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A nipple holder comprising a stock having an interiorly threaded socket in its end, adapted to receive one end of the nipple to be held, a rod secured in and projecting from the end of the stock and passing through the nipple, the projecting end of the rod being provided with exterior threads the reverse in direction of those within the end socket of the stock, and a nut seated upon said projecting end and adapted to bear against'the outer end of the nipple, substantially as herein described.
2. -A nipple holder comprising a hollow stock having an interiorly threaded socket in each end, the threads in one being the reverse of those in the other, said sockets being adapted to receive one end of the nipples to be held, a rod passing through and secured in said stock, its ends passing through the nipples and each being eXteriorly threaded the threads being the'reverse of those in the stock sockets at corresponding ends, and nuts seated upon the rod ends and bearing against the outer ends of the nipples, substantially as hereinl described.
. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH CANNEY. Witnesses: v
O. N. PERRY, EDWIN WRIGHT.
