SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,119, dated July 25, 1893.

Be it known that I, ALFRED D. HEIST, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hold backs for Haines, which improvement is fully set forth in the follow-v ing specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in hold backs for hannes, and consists of a novel device formed as hereinafter described.'

Figure l represents a perspective view of a hold back for a hanne embodying my invention. Fig.2 represents atop viewof the same as in operative position. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of the attachment removed from the hame. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view on line rc, as, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a portion of a haine having a staple B secured thereto in any suitable manner; and C designates a ring which is adapted to be connected with a chain or strap suitably secured to the tongue of a vehicle. The said ring is provided with an eye or loop D, for attaching it to the staple B, the plane of the ring being substantially at a right angle to the plane of the said eye, with which it is integral; so that the chain or strap fastened to the said ring, will not be twistedwhendrawin g backward on thetongue. The ring E normally hangs in a vertical position, and in close proximity to the haine, as shown in Fig. 1.

The solid neck E connecting the ring and eye has rounded outlines conforming to the contour of the haine, so as to ordinarily remain closev to the same. The straps or chains F are fastened to the rings C, and when drawn taut, as in the act of pushing back the load, the strain on the staples is at a right angle to the line of extension of the same, so that any twisting of the strap or the eye on the staples is avoided.

It Will be readily apparent that owing to the uniform action or bearing on both haines, there will be an equal pull or draft on both sides of the collar, whereby the load can be drawn back with less difficulty than if the chain were twisted, or the strain or force eX- erted on the staple were in different and vary ing directions.

The solid neck adds strength to the eye and ring, so as to prevent any twisting of the said parts, and thereby the opening` and union of the spaces of the ring and eye, which is the lcase When the said parts are formed with an open neck.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A hold back for a haine consisting of a ring and eye with solid connecting neck, formed integral therewith the planes of said ring and eye being at substantially right angles to each other, and said ring being adapted to normally hang vertically, when the eye is secured to theY connecting staple on the haine, said parts being combined substantially as described.
