Description

J. T. HAILWoon, STOP 000K' 0R TAP.'
(No Model.)
Patented July 25,1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN THOMAS HAILWOOD, OF ROOHDALE, ENGLAND.
STOP-COCK OR TAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,094, dated July 25, 1893.
Application iiled November 1, 189?. Serial No. 450,662. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS HAIL- WOOD, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Rochdale, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Cocks or Taps,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to stop-cocks or taps; and it relates more particularly to that class provided with plugs and in which the part to which a key or wrench is applied is formed upon the smaller projecting end of the same.
The principal objects of my invention are iirst, to provide a plug, stop-cock or tap in which the construction is simplified and the arrangement of the parts thereof are lessened so as to render the same less expensive and much more durable and effective in action; second, to provide a stop-cock or tap with a hollow tapering plug having the smaller end projecting beyond the body or casing of the device and with a set-screw for adjusting the spindle or plug carrier to position; and third, to provide a stop-cock or tap provided with a hollow tapering plug whose smaller square, hexagonal or other shaped end projects beyond the casing and adapted to receive a key or wrench.
My invention consists of a stop-cock or tap provided with a hollow plug and carrier therefor, constructed and arranged so as to permit of the adjustment of the hollow plug to its internal tapering seat and with a certain portion thereof externally adapted to receive a key or wrench.
My invention further consists of a stopcock or tap provided with a hollow plug and spindle therefor', and a set-screw for adjusting the spindle or carrier of the hollow tapering plug to its internal seat inthe device and having the smaller end projecting beyond the body or casing of the device, whereby the proj ecting smaller end of said hollow-plug is made available for the reception of a key,
wrench or similar appliance.
My invention further consists of a hollow plug stop-cock or tap having a thimble or hat shaped piece with perforations therein and operating upon the larger end of the plugin conjunction with a spindle provided with a head abutting a detachable cap and an adjusting-screw; and my invention further consists of the improvements in hollow plug stop-cocks or taps hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof; and in which- Figure 1, is a longitudinal central section of a stop-cock or tap embodying features ofV my invention and showing an exterior casing having a tapering seat integral therewith, a tapering plug having an axial and radial I'luidway, an unyielding plug carrier adapted to afford access to the axial portion of the duidway and engaging the top of the cavity in the plug, and a set-screw for co-operating with the plug carrier. Fig. 2, is a cross-section of the same; and Fig. 3, is a longitudinal central section, showing a plug carrier engaging the lower rim ofthe plug.
In the drawings A, is the exterior casing of the tap or cock provided with an integral tapering seat a', for the reception of a tapered plug B, whose smaller extremity projects beyond the exterior casing A, and is provided with a rectangular seat b, for the reception of a wrench or key. The plug B, is provided with van axial and a radial fluid-way that cooperate with suitable inlet and outlet openings in the exterior casing A, so that the liquid or other substance may liow through the tap or cock when the latter is in open position in the manner indicated vby the arrows in the drawings.
O, is a cap for closing an aperture in the exterior casing A, and is adapted to afford means for permitting of the introduction or Withdrawal of the plug B. It is important that the plug B, should be held firmly and snugly to place upon its seat a', at all times, in order to avoid leakage and insure the proper operation of the tap or cock, While at the same time the lower portion of the plug, 1I. e. the axial fluid-way, must be kept open. These results are accomplished according to my invention by the employment of a setscrew and its complemental unyie'lding plugcarrier, which is constructed in such manner IOO that it does not close the axial fluid-way. Of course the unyielding plug-carrier may assume various forms.
Referring to Figs. l, 2 and 3, the plug carrier E is provided at its lower extremity with an enlargement or head` e, fitting snugly in a recess c, in the cap C;
D, is a set-screw Working in a suitably tapped aperture in the cap C.
Between the head e, of the plugcarrier, and the flat end of the set-screw D, is a layer or packing F,of asbestus or other suitable material. plug-carrier E, is shifted in the direction of its length, and this movement of the plugcarrier is availed of for adjusting the plugB, to its seat a. In Figs. 1 and2, the upper extremity of the plug-carrier E, comprises a small stem e2, that abuts upon'the upper portion of the recess in the plug B, and thus forms a pivot about which the plug B, may be turned. Moreover the axial fluid-way is-fully open, because the fluid or other substance flows around the stem e2, and is thuslpermitted topass through the axial fluidway as is indicated by the arrows in Fig. l.
In Fig. 3, the upper extremity of the plug carrier E, is provided with an annular flange e3, that` constitutes a pivot upon whichu the lower rim of the plug B- is revolubly supported. In order toafford` a passage for the fluid or other material through theaxial fluid-Way of the plug B, radial apertures h, are provided in the annular Ilangecs, so that thearrowsin said ligure indicate the passage of the fluid' or other material' through the cock or tap.`
b2, is an oil-hole cut or otherwise formed'in the smaller portion of the plug B, and'through which oil` may be supplied for lubricating the plugand its complemental carrier E.
G, isa cap for closing the oil hole h2.
Fromr theforegoing description it appears that allof the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawingsare provided with an exterior casing A, having a tapered seat of', for the reception of a hollow plug B, and with an unyielding plug-carrier operated by a setscrew and constituting a pivot for revolubly i supportiugtheplug B,in such lnannerthatfree access tothe interior thereof is, afforded, and
in such manner that the plug maybe readily j adjusted to its seat.
Having thus described the natureand objects of my invention, what I claim as new,
and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isL
Vhen the set-screw D, is turned the l. A stop cock or tap, comprising a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet and an internal tapering seat, a hollow tapering plug provided with fluid ways and having the smaller end extending vertically beyond the E casing and forming aseat` for the reception of a key or Wrench, a plug-carrier provided with a packed seat, a cap detachably engaging said leasing and avertical adjusting screwinserted through said cap and adapted to engage with the seat of said plug-carrier, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
p 2. A stop cock or tap, comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet and an internal tapering seat, a hollow tapering plug with a lthimble or hat shaped internal body and fluidways co-operating with the inlet and outletof said casing', a plug-carrier provided with a ipacked seat, a cap detachably engaging said" casing and averticaladj usting screw inserted through said cap and adaptedi to engage with the seat of said plug-carrier, substantially as ternal seat, a hollow-plug engaging with said lseat, a carrier or spindle for said plug provided with an annular flange forminga pivot for revolubly supporting theplug to position, radial apertures in` said: flange for the passage 'of Iluidthrough tliedevi'ce, an oil hole prol vided in the smaller-end of saidl plugandhavling acap for closing the saine, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
iprovided withy an inlet, an outlet andi` an` intermal-seat, a plug having the smaller endproj ecting beyond the casing for the reception-of akey or Wrench and with axial and radial fluidl- Ways, a plug-carrier providedf with a flange having radial apertures therein and lsupporting one end ofthe plugand said carrier seated to or abutting against a set-screw ffor adjusting the same to position, a removkable cap connected" with said casing and detachably connected with said set screw, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness Whereofl have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
