MILK-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,085, dated July 25, 1893.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PHILIPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in milk cans and has for its object to provide an improved cast metal breast, neck and mouth-piece and unite the same to the tinplate body, so as to make the inside smooth, to strengthen the can, as well as to cheapen its manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a vertical longitudinal section through the can. Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of the mouth-piece detached from the neck of the can. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective View of the breast and the neck of the can, and showing the handle.
Referring to the drawings the letter, A, indicates the body of the can which is made of heavy tin-plate.
B, designates the bottom of the can, likewise of heavy tin-plate.
The breast, O, and the neck, 0', are formed integral, being made of cast-iron and in one piece. The lower edge of the breast com; prises a flange, f, within which is a shoulder, e, and the top-edge of the body, A, of the can fits inside of the flange and abuts against said shoulder. The cast-iron breast and neck are tinned. The parts at, e, f, are joined together closely and the seam is made tight by means of solder. Thus on the inside of the can the surface where the seam occurs is perfectly smooth and without ridge or crevice. The exterior of the breast has immediately outside of this scam or joint an outward bead, f, extending around it like a hoop, and serving to protect the thinner tinplate of the can-body from blows or knocks in manner similar to iron-clad cans. The seam or joint uniting the parts, 9, g, and, d, are made tight by means of solder, same as the other seam.
The laterally-projecting eye-bolt, h, is secured at one side of the mouth-piece and the the hinge-clip, 7c, diametrically opposite.
The lid, I, has a downwardly-projecting flange, j, which fits inside the mouth-piece and a lateral flange, j which rests on the top-edge of the same; the hinge, j, is secured at one end to the lateral flange of the lid, and the other end, to the clip, k,on the mouthpiece, D ra hasp, i, secured to the lid takes over the eye-bolt, 72.
By the above arrangement of parts the entire interior of the can presents a smooth surface, free of ridges, and after the said parts are soldered together there are no cracks or crevices which are not easily accessible to clean.
The handles, L, are secured to the top part of the breast, C, of the can and project up so that from a number of cans closely placed together, as they are in railway cars during transportation, any one of them may be seized by the handles and lifted out without disturbing the others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a milk can thecombination of the breast, O, and neck, 0', formed integral of cast metal and having a circumferential shoulder, e, on the inner side of the breast near the lower edge thereof and a shoulder, g, on the outer side and near the top edge of the neck; a body, A, having its upper edge fitted within the lower edge of the breast and abutting against the said inner shoulder; a mouth-piece having a downwardly-projecting flange, d, fitting over the neck-piece and abutting the said outer shoulder, g, as shown and described.
