ROBERT WALKER, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
CHAIN-CLIP FOR CLOTH-FINISHING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,855, dated July 18, 1893. Application filed September 22, 1891 Serial No. 06,517- (No model.) Patented in England December 2, 1890, No. 19,606-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT WALKER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Glasgow, in the county of Lanai-k, Scotland, have invented certain Improvements in Chain-Clips for Cloth-Finishing Machines, (for which Letters Patent have been obtained in Great Britain, dated December 2, 1890, No. 19,606,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction and action of chain clips for cloth finishing machines.
Figure 1, on the accompanying sheet of drawings is a plan; Fig. 2,asectional side elevation; Fig. 3, a front elevation and Fig. 4, a side elevation of the improved chain clip.
In the drawings the same reference letters are used to mark the same or like parts wherever they are repeated.
A clip as made Wit-h the improvements is of a kind having the upper jaw or gripper, A, fixed on a spindle, B, turning in bearings in the ends of brackets, 0, cast in a piece with the link, D, which is made with a single joint eye, E, at one end and with a pair of joint eyes, E, at the other end so as to allow of a series of clips being jointed together as is well understood. The upper jaw, A, is inclined from its axis in a manner to cause it to grip the firmer with the strain or pull of the woven fabric, F, on it. It is however, prevented from gripping the fabric, F, except quite near to the selvage, by a lever, G, having a prong, G and centered on an axis, H, fixed in the brackets, 0, some distance back from the axis of the upper jaw, A, the prong, G resting on the fabric, F, when itis first entered in between the jaws, A, .T. The lower jaw plate, J is fixed to and carried by brackets, K, cast in a piece with the link, D; and a slot, L, is formed in the said lower jaw plate, J, under the prong, G so that when the selvage of the fabric, F, is drawn from under the prong, the prong falls into the slot, L, as shown in Fig. 4. When the lever, G, has its prong, G resting on the fabric, F, the lever by a projection, G acting on a projection, A "on the back of the upper jaw, A, holds that jaw up just out of contact, from the fabric, F, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, but the upper jaw, A, drops and grips the fabric whenever the lever prong, G drops into the slot, L; and in this way the gripping action is made to take place close to the extreme edge of the fabric. The lever, G, is formed with the usual arm, G extending upward which is acted on by the usual cam guide rail (not shown) for opening the clip at the proper parts of the machine, the lever prong, G projecting through a slot, M, in the upper jaw, A, when the parts are in the open position.
What I claim as my invention is- A chain clip composed of a link with an upper anda lower jaw, the lower jaw being fixed to the link and provided with a slot, the upper jaw being pivoted to a fixed part of the link and provided with a curved back projection and a slot, in combination with a lever also pivoted to a fixed part of the link, and provided with a prong adapted to rest on the cloth above the slot in the lowerjaw, and also provided with a projection to lift the upper jaw, the said-prong adapted to pass through the slot in the upper jawwhen above the cloth, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT WALKER.
