Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD SIMMONS, OF SOUTH PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN cLAIvIPING DEVICES.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,175, dated September 26, 1865.
To all 'wh-om it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD SIMMONS, of South Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Clamp for Boot-Crimping Devices; and I do hereby declare that the followin gis a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to Inake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitcation, in which Figure l is a vertical section of my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of a portion pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to obtain a clamp for boot-crimping devices which will not injure or tear the leather While the same is being stretched or drawn over the tree.
To this end the invention consists in inserting in the sides ofthe clamp, which grasp the leather, pieces of wood, gutta-percha, or other material which, on account of its softness, will not injure the grain of the leather and still be lirm enough to grasp it securely.
A represents an iron of curved form, having two sides, a a, and a curved top, b, all in one piece. The inner surfaces of the lower parts of the sides a a are beveled or inclined, and have pieces of wood g inserted in them, as shown in Fig. 1, the wood extending entirely across the sides a a.
B represents a nut, through which a screw, C, passes, the sides of said nut being inclined corresponding to the inclination ofthe sidesa ot. This nut B with the iron A and screw O compose the clamp, the edges of the leather D being grasped between the nut and the wood g inserted in the sides a ot' A, and the lower end of the screw being against the tree E, over which the leather F is stretched. (See Fig. 1.) The wood g eft'ectnally prevents the leather from slipping, While it prevents the same from being injured under the pressure and pull of the clamp. Iron surfaces rupture or injure the grain of the leather, and the clamp above described, Which Was previously IIsed without the wood, has been objected to by many on that account.
I do not conine myself to the use of wood, for gutta-percha and sole-leather may be used instead, and inserted in the sides of the nut B instead of a, (see Fig. 2,) or in both, if desired.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The employment or use of wooden, guttapercha, leather, or strips ot' other material inserted in or applied to a clamp ot' a boot-Crim ping machine, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
EDWARD SIMMONS.
