EAR-PHONE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,600, dated July 18, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WARREN FARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Ear- Phone Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for telephone receiving instruments, and has for its object to inclose the ear of the receiving operator or subscriber to prevent disturbance by local or adjacent noises or sounds, and thereby concentrate the sounds coming through the receiving instrument on the ear of the receiver.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view in detail of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the attachment applied.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a thin band of rubber that is placed over the head of the receiving instrument around the receiving orifice and projects outwardly from the said head, as shown in Fig. 1, the exposed edge thereof being slightly flared to produce a close contact around the ear of the receiving operator or subscriber. The elasticity of the band 1 causes the same to snugly fit over and conform to the contour of the head of the receiving instrument and will hold itself in position. To the said band is attached one end of a rubber tube 2, whose rear end is connected to a rubber bulb 3 and has a valve 4 of any preferred form. The rubber bulb 3 is of such shape as to fit over and surround a part of the body of the receiving instrument and is operated by the hand that is used in holding the instrument. It
will be observed that the attachment is made entirely of rubber, and in operating the same the projecting part of the band 1 is placed over the ear of the receiving operator or subscriber. The bulb 3 is then pressed or contracted by the hand that holds the receiving instrument and the air is removed from the encircled end of the receiving instrument that fits over the ear and causing the said end to adhere tightly to the car, which operation of reinoving the air is produced by the valve 4, which is a suction valve, and operates in a manner well understood in the art. By this means all exterior sounds are excluded from the ear while receiving the message, and the attachment being simple in its nature is easily applied and will not become accidentally displaced. as the bulb 3 snugly fits around the body of the receiving instrument.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minordetails of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An attachment for a telephonic receiving instrument, consisting of a band, a bulb, and a pipe connecting said band and bulb, substantially as described.
2. In an attachment for telephonic receiving instruments, the combination of a band arranged to be fitted over the head of the receiving instrument, a bulb adapted to encircle the body of said instrument, and a pipe or tube connecting said band and bulb and having a suction-valve therein, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a telephonic receiving instrument, of a flexible band surrounding the receiving orifice thereof, and a suction bulb connected to said projection and adapted to contract the same around the ear of the receiving operator, substantially as described.
