Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT D. PATTERSON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IM PROVEM ENT IN HYDRANTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50, [55, dated September 26, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT D. PATTERSON, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of hydrants which are provided with a drip or waste hole for the escape of that portion of the Water which remains above the plunger after the hydrant is closed, in order to prevent freezing.
In the accompanying drawing` a hydrant embodying my improvement is represented by an axial section.
Arepresents the main supply-pipe, Surmounted by a valve-chamber, B, with which it communicates by an aperture, C, whose upper margin forms a seat for the plunger D.
E is a branch or side pipe, which, when the plunger is elevated, permits the water to asscend through the aperture C and to pass upward into the discharge-pipe F, which pipe is screwed vertically into the top of the chamber B, and incloses the piston-rod G. The drip-hole H is always open when the plunger D is at its closed or lowest position, (see drawing,) and is covered by the plunger whenever the latter is sufficiently elevated to throw open the branch E.
The plunger-rod Gr is surmounted by a nuthead, H', which receives a screw, I, on the lower end ofthe operating-handle J, which handle is secured in a screw-cap, K, by means of collar L and pin M.
It will be seen that by simplyunscrewing the cap K the plunger D may be easily withdrawn for inspection, repair, or renewal 5 or, by removing the pins M and N and the handle proper, O, together with the cap K, and leaving the plunger in place, the entire disch arge-pipe may be unserewed from the valveohamber and lifted out Without disturbing the ground, or even making it necessary to -shut oft the main.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The arrangement of main pipe A, valvechamber B, slatted aperture C, axial plunger D, branch E, discharge-pipe F, and drip or Wasteway H, the same being combined and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT D. PATTERSON.
