DRUM-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,318, dated July 11, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMILE BOULANGER, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum-Cases, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in drum cases and consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and set forth in the claim.

The object of my invention is to construct a portable covering for snare and other drums, the construction and operation of which combine simplicity. It efiectually prevents the action of damp weather upon the drum when incased therein and is more especially designed for use in traveling and shipment.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line AA in Fig. 3, showing the drum in dotted lines.

Referring to the drawings: 1 indicates my complete invention consisting of two sectional portions 2 and 3, the same being circular in form when the two sections are together. Each of the sections 2 and 3 are in the form of a part of a circle, that is alittle more than half of same, and are joined together in a manner hereinafter described.

The complete device makes a case circular in side elevation and of sufficient depth to admit of the reception of a drum. The end walls 4 have the peripheral covering 5 sewed thereto at the edges and the section 2 of the case is provided with a handle 6 upon said peripheral covering 5, said handle 6being secured by suitable means to said cover.

In this connection I desire to state that the case can be made of leather, rubber, or any other protective material which would serve the purpose.

As before stated, the sections 2'and 3 are in form a little more than one-half of a circle, so that in order to carry out the idea of my invention, I have secured the walls 4 together at suitable points in a revoluble manner, in order that the section 3 can be turned into the section 2, with its peripheral covering following the inner outline of the section 2. As the complete case is exactly circular in outline, the difference in the size of each section over the half of a circle, in the case of the section 2 laps over the section 3, with a part of the section 3 within the section 2. Through the lapped-over portions of the section 2 and the under portion of the section 3, and in both walls 4. are placed rivets 7, the two rivets being in horizontal alignment. Under the heads of the rivets, and therefore on the outer sides of the walls 4 of the section 2 and the inner sides of the walls 4 of section 3 are placed washers 8 upon said rivets 7 and also said rivets'7 and adjacent the outer sides of the walls4 of the section 3 and the innor sides of the walls l of the section 2 are washers respectively 9 and 10, thus making four washers to each drawing, the object of samebeing to prevent the displacement of the rivets. The handle 6 is provided upon both ends with loops 11 through which are placed rectangular-shaped rings 12 the lower sides of which are movable under plates 13 secured to the peripheral casing 5. Upon the sides of said peripheral casing 5 and at a point directly above and adjacent to the extremities of the upper casing 2 are buckles 14 secured by a suitable means to the peripheral covering 5 and into which are adapted to be normally secured straps 15 which are fastened to the peripheral covering 5 of the section 3 below the extremities of said upper section 2.

I will suppose for example that the case is closed as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and that it is desired to open the same. The straps 15 are released from their engagement in the buckles 14 and by grasping the strap 15 on one side with one hand, and the handle 6 with the other, the upper case 2can be pulled around over the lower case 3 until the two edges of the sections 2 and 3 are in alignment. The case being made out of leather or The section 3 would fit within the section some equally elastic material, the cover will readily slide over the strap 15 which doubles under against the peripheral covering. The drum is now placed in the half shell thus described by the merging of the two sections and the upper section pulled out until the circular case is complete and the straps 15 are then secured to the buckles l t and the case with the drum inside is then ready for transportation.

I do not Wish to confine myself to the particular style of handle herein shown nor definitely to the material used in the manufacture of my case.
