Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GOLDSMITH, of Berkley, in thecounty of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sweepers,

and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in floor sweepers.

The object of the invention is to produce a sweeper which will beadapted to remove lint, or fiber, from bare or carpeted floors.

The invention consists in certain peculiar features of construction and novel combinationof parts which will hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a view of one form of the improved sweeper formed of flexible sections and having a handle. Fig.2 represents an enlarged view of a portion of the sweeperback and wires.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

In mills where large quantities of fibrous material are constantly handled lint from the same and also the fiber itself is continually falling on the floor.- To remove this lint, or fiber, a thorough sweeping is necessary. This is impractical with the present style of brushes and brooms as the violent movement thereof will raise the light fiber and lint and the drafts occasioned by the movement of the sweepers will drive the fiber and lint over the room where it will cause damage by settling in the bearings of the machinery or on goods in the process of manufacture. Again, in sweeping carpets made of pile fabrics, the ordinary broom or brush will not remove the lint which is caught by the pile. is designed to overcome these difficulties and My improved sweeper to readily remove lint or fiber from either a bare-or a carpeted floor.

In carrying my invention into effect I form the sweeper from several sections of flexible backings 5-5 through which the wire-teeth 66 are inserted. The sections 55 I secure together by links 77 or any other pivotal fastenings and to one of the sections 1 fasten the tongue 8 to which any form of handle may be secured. I some-times secure two or more of the flexible strips, or sections, 55, having the bent Wires 6-6, to arigid top 9, Fig. 1, into which a handle may be secured. The backings 5-5 are generally made of leather, but textile material may be used for the same. The wire-teeth 66 are of a shape similar to those used in making card-clothing and the improved sweeper may be formed of sections of such card-clothing either when new or when too much worn to be useful in a carding-engine, thus providing a use for this wornout material which manufacturers have heretofore been obliged to throwaway when it has become too much worn to be used in cardingengines.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent hand.
