Jo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAYTON 'WOLOQTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for the Meeting-Rails of Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for the meeting-rails of window sashes; and the objects of my improvement are simplicity and economy in construction and general efficiency in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my fastener in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same,

Fig. 10 is a reverse plan view of the cap and its operating lever, and Fig. 11 is a reverse plan view of a slightly modified form of latch.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the fastener patented to me October 14., 1890, No. 438,337, and it has the same form and general mode of operation. In this connection reference is also made to my Patent No. 383,543), dated May 29, 1884..
A designates the keeper of ordinary construction and which is shown only in Fig. 1.
B designates the base plate having the ordinary ears or perforated portions for the insertion of screws in attaching it in place, the middle portion of which base plate is provided with a disk like elevation 12 surmounted by a central tubular boss 13 and having a lateral projection 14 at its front edge, while its rear edge is provided with the locking slot 15. The central boss 13 of the base plate is both recessed and perforated for the reception of springs and the pivotal pin hereinafter described. Upon the disk like elevation of the base plate, I mount the ring shaped latch plate C, the interior of which at the base is of circular'form to fit the edge of said disk, while a quarter segment is cut out of a larger diameter to form stop shoulders 16 and 17 and to accommodate the lateral projection 14 and permit said latch plate to make substantially a quarter revolution on the base plate, said movement being limited by the stop shoulders engaging the respective sides of the lateral projection 14. This latch plate C is also provided at one side with a notch 18. The upper portion of this latch plate is provided with a slot or opening 19 for the passage of the body of thelatch D and with a shoulder 20 fora spring seat. The latch Dis provided with the usual hooked outer end, while its inner end is recessed to fit over the central boss 13 of the base plate where it rests upon the upper edge of said boss as shown in Fig. 2. The inner end of the latch is provided with a slot 21 which receives the pivot pin 22 whereby that end of the latch is guided in its longitudinal movement. The latch is provided with a downwardly projecting stud or pin 23 for engagement with the notch 18 on the latch plate and the locking slot 15 of the base plate.
The upper and opposite side of the latch is provided with a projection or pin 24 for being engaged by the cam slot 25 of the cap plate E. This cap plate is also provided with an operating handle'or lever 26. A spring 27 is placed in the upper part of the central boss 13 with its short arm 28 engaged in a radial slot therein, while its longer arm 29 extends outwardly and rests upon the spring seat 20 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The upper end of the boss 13 is cut away for about a quarter of a circle as at 30 to permit the outward extension of the longer arm 29 of the spring 27. The side wall on the latch D is also recessed or cut away as at 33 to enable the longer arm 29 of the spring 27 to extend through it and bear upon the spring seat of the latch plate as described. The pivotal post or pin which is or may be formed integral with the cap plate E extends through the central boss and base plate and is secured therein in any proper manner, as for example by a washer 31 over which the end of the pivotal post is headed. For convenience of manufacture and to prevent the parts from binding when thus secured by heading the pivotal post,I prefer to employ a light spring 32 underneath the washer as shown in Fig.2, but this is not of my present invention and is not essential.
The fastener in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is shown in its locked position in which the downwardly projecting pin 23 is within the looking slot 15 of the base plate whereby the latch is locked against rotation in either direction. The spring 27, when the latch is in this position is under the greatest strain with the long arm 29 carried around to the left as shown in Fig. 3. Upon taking hold of the handle or lever 26 of the cap E and turning it into a position at or about right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1, the camslot 25 acts upon the projection or pin 2 1 of the latch to move said latch longitudinally in a rearward direction so as to carry the downwardly projecting pin 23 out of the locking slot 15 in the base plate and into the notch 18 of the latch plate so as to necessitate the simultaneous rotation of the latch plate and latch. The force of the spring 27 then carries the combined cap, latch and latch plate about a quarter of a revolution, thereby wholly disengaging the latch from the keeper while the spring will hold it in said position against accidental displacement. The position of the spring, latch plate and base plate when in their unlocked position is shown in Fig. 4: in which the movement of the parts is stopped by the stop shoulder 16 of the latch plate engaging the left hand side of the lateral projection 14 of the base plate. The spring 27 is not essential to the general operation of my latch and may be omitted if desired. If omitted, the final movement of the parts for unlocking must be effected through the handle or lever 26. In looking the fastener, the handle or lever 26 is turned from the right toward the left, the downwardly projecting pin 23 and notch 18 of the latch plate causing said parts to move together until the movement of the latch plate is arrested by the stop shoulder 17 coming in contact with one side of the projection 14 as shown in Fig. 3. The cam groove 25 and engaging pin 24 on the latch plate then act to draw the latch longitudinally inward on the latch plate as said cap and its handle are moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 thereby bringing the parts into their locking position as before described.
When the opening or side recess 33 in the latch is made long enough to be entirely free of the spring arm 29 in operating the latch,
the spring 27 has no direct action on the latch. By making said notch or opening of less width as shown at 333 in Fig. 11, the spring arm 29 of the spring 27 will bear directly upon one wall of said opening in the latch with a tendency to force said latch longitudinally inward, while it also acts to throw the parts into their unlocked position as before described. This can be done Without changing the construction in any other respect and so as to permit the end of the spring arm 29 to bear upon the spring seat 20 of the latch plate when the latch is fully withdrawn as before described. The general operation is the same in both cases, but by narrowing up the slot in the latch as shown in Fig. 11, an additional function is imparted to the sprlng.
By my improvements I simplify the construction, avoid slotting the base plate and render the general construction more simple and efficient. I also provide a spring for throwing the parts into their unlocked position and holding them against accidental displacement in a simple, efficient and inexpensive manner; but a return spring of itself 15 not new.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of the base plate B having the disk like projection with a looking notch 15 and lateral projection l l, the latch plate inelosing said disk and body of the latch as mounted on said base plate and having the internal stop shoulders 16 and 17 and the inwardly opening recess or notch 18, the latch D longitudinally slotted and having the downwardly projecting pin 23 for engaging said slots 15 and 18, and the upwardly projecting pin 24:; and the cap E having the cam groove 25 for engagement with the pin 24: of said latch, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the base plate having the disk like projection and central boss 13, the latch plate mounted thereon and having the spring seat 20; the latch mounted in said latch plate; the cap E having means for imparting a longitudinal movement to said latch, and a spring 27 with one arm secured within said central boss and the other arm extending outwardly therefrom through the latch for engaging the spring seat on the latch plate, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
