Description

(No model) J. W. SEARLE. GOPY HOLDER AND PRINTERS GUIDE. No. 501,234. I Patented July 11, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. SEARLE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM LEE WVHITE, OF SAME PLACE.
COPY-HOLDER AND PRI'NTERS GUIDE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 501,234, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed January 18, 1893. Serial No. 458,871. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SEARLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Copy-Holders and Printers Guides, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved copyholder for type setters, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap, simple and efficient holder that can be quickly attached to the type case when needed for use and easily detached and disjointed when not in use.
A further object is to provide a holder in which the matter set up can be rolled out of sight and one in which the line being set up is always clearly indicated.
With these various objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts and theirnovel combination or arrangement all of which will be fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure 1. is a perspective view of my invention the paper clip being shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2. is a section on line 22 Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a detail view showing the roller, clip, and presser plate in front elevation.
In carrying out my invention I employ a frame A. rectangular in shape and composed of the side pieces a top bar a and the inclined bottom board a A plate B. is secured to the top bar a said plate being perforated at .b and provided with a collar 1) which receives the'end of a bracket arm 0 which arm supports the holder in place, the opposite end of said arm being forked as shown at c and adapted to embrace one side of the case from which the type are to be selected.
The frame A. is held rigid upon the bracket arm 0 by means of a set screw 0' passed through the collar 1) and bearing on the end of arm.
A roller D, is journaled in the side pieces of the frame A. said roller having a knob 01 at the right hand end. The left hand end also formed with a lug or cam 6'.
projects through the side of frame, and bear- 5o ing onsaid end is a friction plate D which holds the roller against rotation except when moved by the operator.
A flat presser plate E is arranged above the roller D, and bears thereon to press the pa- 5 5 per tight against said roll. This presser plate is mounted upon a shaft E. journaled in the side pieces of frame one end of which is provided with a knob 6 While the other end is A spring plate F is secured to the side piece a'and bears upon the lug or cam e thereby holding the presser plate firm in any adjusted position.
A rod G is secured to the outer face of the presser plate E. and on said rod slides an indicator point I-I. said point hanging down as shown and pointing to the line which is to be set up.
A round bar I. is rigidly secured bet-ween the lower ends of the end pieces, adjacent to the inclined base board, the paper being passed between said bar and board as it is fed to the paper winding roller D. In order to secure the top edge of paper to said roller 7 I employ a paper clip K, which partially surrounds the roller near the center, said clip being secured at one end to the roller and free at the other but resting close to the roller. The top edge of paper is placed between this free end and roller thus securing it to the roller, preparatory to being wound thereon.
In operation, the frame is attached to the bracket arm and said arm attached to the type case. The presser plate is then turned up by means of its knob and the paper after being passed bet-ween the lower bar and board is slipped beneath the paper clip on the paper winding roll. The presser plate is then turned down and rests upon the paper the lower end 0 of pointer resting upon the line of composition to be set up. Should the copy be quite narrow the pointer can be slid along the bar to meet the same. After one line has been set up the paper winding roller is turned un- 5 til. the next line is brought up to the bottom of pointer. These operations are then repeated until the entire com position has been set up when the presser plate is turned up and the paperunwound from roller and removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a copy holder, a holder frame comprising a paper winding roller, a clip arranged thereon, a presser plate, andline indicator attached to said plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a copy holder, a holder frame com prising a paper winding roller, a spring clip thereon, a spring presser plate and an adjustable line indicator,-all arranged substantially as shown and described. r
3. The combination with a frame, of a paper winding roller journaled therein, the paper clip thereon, the presser plate, the shaft JAMES WV. SEARLE.
