OPEN-HEARTH STEEL-MELTING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,200, dated July 11, 1893.
Application filed January 18, 1889. Serial No. 296,711- (No model.) Patenteclin England July 26, 1887, No. 10,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM WAILES, of Prescot, in the county of Staiford, England; have invented a new and useful Improvement in Open-Hearth Steel-Melting Furnaces, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated July 26, 1889, No. 10,387,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to open hearth steel melting furnaces or like furnaces, such as glass. tank furnaces having a hearth, side walls and roof.
The object of my invention is to construct such furnaces so that they will be durable, more easily repaired and conveniently renewed in those parts which are more liable to deterioration or wear.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in an open hearth steel melting or like furnace having the side Walls or a portion thereof formed of sections of refractory material between the hearth and roof and supported independently of said hearth and roof.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal elevation and section on the line AA, in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a view in plan and section on the line BB in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line GO, in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a face view; and Fig. 5 a cross section of a removable section of a side wall for use over the charging door.
Like letters indicate like parts in each.
The side walls a are formed in sections of refractory material fixed into shells or holders a which are attached to and supported by arms I) which are carried in bearings e secured to brackets d attached to a casing e surrounding the hearthf. When any section of the side wall is worn it can be swung out on the arms I) and removed, a new section being attached and swung into position again without disturbing the roof. The roof g rests on the frame h which is supported on uprights 'i 2" carried on the casing-e and brackets d. The uprights i are connected by tie bolts j to hold the parts together. The gas ports k and air ports Z are built between the roof and hearth. Spaces between the side walls and hearth are closed by ramming in lime and carbon mixed with tar or the like, and the spaces between the side walls and roof are closed by ramming in silica; suit-- tion of a side wall for use over the charging door.

By the above construction the side walls can be quickly and easily replaced when they are cut out by the metal without the rebuilding of the furnace, the side walls including the part of the furnace where this cutting or wearing action is most liable to take place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An open hearth steel melting or like furnace, having the side walls, or a portion thereof, formed of sections of refractory material between the hearth and roof and supported independently of the hearth and roof, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An open hearth steel melting or like furnace, having the side walls, or a portion thereof, formed of movable sections of refractory material, between the hearth and roof, said sections being carried by arms secured to suitable supports, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. An open hearth steel melting or like furnace, having the side walls, or a portion thereof, formed of movable sections of refractory material between the hearth and roof, said sections being carried by arms hinged to suitable supports, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
