DEVICE FOR HEATING WATER IN BATH-TUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,802, dated July 4, 1893. Application filed April 10, 1893- Serial No. 469,730- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARRENT W. FELT- HOUSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Heating ater in Bath- Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices for heating water in bath-tubs, and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the lower part of my device, partly in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the burner proper.
A represents the wall or casing of my device, of such a height as to come above the exhaust water line of a bath tub.
B is the bottom of said device, preferably provided with lugs or feet I) b to raise the said bottom slightly above the bottom of the tub. This bottom B is provided with any suitable number of holes or inlets c 0 (four being shown, but the number, more or less, being immaterial) which communicate by suitable pipes d, with the bottom of the outer portion 0 of the double water-shell O D, preferably annular in form, the outer portion 0 being connected, at top, with the inner portion D by an annular conduit 6. From near the top of the said outer portion 0 there extend outlet pipes CL, which pass through the said wall or casing A, as shown.
E is the burner, located in the lower part of the device, and it consists primarily of an annular channeled portion, and cap F. The burner is conveniently made in the form of a shell, having a perforation f in its base to fit over a boss 9 on the bottom 13 of the device, to center the burner to place, and when the cap F is applied, the two parts are held together, and to the bottom 13, by a screw 71. as shown. The burner has a closed gas inlet H,
leading to the described annular channel G,
thischannel decreasing in depth and width from this point of inlet to the point opposite thereto, there being a partition i at the center of said inlet, and this channel is open at the top all around, the cap F projecting over the same, but at a higher plane, so as to make a continuous annular line of combustion all around said burner.
I is the gas supply pipe, supported within the device, as shown, and having a tip or outlet j entering the described inlet H, and having any suitable connections, such as the branch J and flexible pipe or tube K, with the source of gas supply. From the branch J there conveniently extends another flexible pipe or tube L, to which is secured the lighter pipe M, the latter having a bent end an, and a guide-lug n. The cap F is provided with an upward annular flange N, having a perforation 19 just opposite the outlet of the bentend on of the lighter-pipe M when the latter has been adjusted to place by dropping its guide-lug n into a step or socket o therefor, formed in the top of the cap F. The pipes I, L, are provided with suitable cocks (1,03 respectively, as shown. The inner-wall of the channel G rises to a greater height than the outer wall, and between the top of said inner wall, and the under side of the cap F, there is interposed a packing 8, consisting preferably of a gasket of asbestus.

The variable depth of the channel G is indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3 (Fig. 8 being a section through the burner taken at right angles to the section line of Fig. 1). By this regulation of depth, in connection with the narrowing in the width of the channel, already referred to, and illustrated best in Fig. 2, there will be no dead space for the accumulation of still gas, but the gas will instantly fill the whole channel,
as soon as turned on, at pipe I, and move to the outlet thereof, and the gas will be kept at 5 practically the same pressure throughout all portions of the channel, and burn evenly.
WVhen my device is to be used, it is placed in a bath tub, and the latter filled to the desired height, above the outlets a a of said device, and then the device is ready for lighting.
To light the device, the cock 0" is first turned, to supply gas to the lighter pipe M, and then the gas is lighted at the outlet of the bent end of the said lighter pipe M. This pipe M is then dropped to place, as already described (and shown in Fig. 1) and then the cock g is gently turned, and as the gas from the supply pipe I passes into the channel G, and out therefrom, between the outer wall of said channel and the overhanging edge of the cap F, it is ignited at the point and the flame at once spreads all around the burner. The cock 1" is then turned to shut off the supply of gas to the pipe M, and the latter removed, and the tube 0 is then pulled up (being supported by frictional contact with the inner wall D, as described) forming a draft flue. In a very short time the temperature of the water will be raised to the desired degree, the water circulating freely through the inlets, water-shell and outlets, and the flame and heated air rising up from the described annular line of combustion over the flange N of the cap F, heating the part 0 of the said shell, and then down under the partD thereof and up through the described draft flue, thereby heating the said part D of the double water-shell.
It will be observed that the under side of the edge of the cap F, and the upper inner edge of the outer wall of the channel G in the burner, are correspondingly beveled, in consequence of which the flame is directed upward, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. l, instead of impinging directly against the inner wall of part 0, and this insures a better combustion besides obviating the objection of blackening said wall as would otherwise occur, and it will be noted that said outer wall of the channel in the burner rises to a plane somewhat above that of the bottom line of said part 0, and by reason of this described construction and the beveled outlet just named, the gas is prevented from igniting at the outletj of the supply pipe I.
Although specially designed for heating the water in bath-tubs, it is obvious that my device is equally well adapted for use in connection with wash-tubs or similar vessels or wherever a portable water-heating device is needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A port-able water-heating device, adapted for submersion in bath-tubs and analogous vessels, comprising an exterior casing, a burner in the lower part thereof having an annular channel for the line of combustion all around the same, a flanged cap above said burner, a central draft flue above said cap, a double annular water-shell within the casing,

communicating with said shell and outlets from said shell and a gas supply pipe supported rigidly within said casing and communicating with said burner, substantially as set forth.
2. In a portable water-heating device, the combination with a suitable casing, and water-shell supported therein, and provided with inlets and outlets extending through said casing, of a burner located in the lower part of said casing and provided with an annular gas channel decreasing in depth and width from the inlet point to a point opposite thereto, and a cap projecting over said channel, and forming an annular combustion line,substantially as set forth.
3. In a portable water-heating device, the combination with a suitable casing, and a double water-shell supported therein, and provided with inlets and outlets, extending through said casing, of a burnerlocated in the lower part of said casing, and provided with an annular gas channel decreasing in depth and width from the inlet point to a point opposite thereto, a cap secured to said burner and projecting over said channel, and having an upright annular flange projecting up between the inner and outerportions of the said double Water-shell, and a central draft flue supported above said cap, and having its lower end below the upper end of said cap-flange, substantially as set forth.

5. In a portable water-heating device, the combination with a suitable casing, and a double water-shell supported therein, and provided with inlets and outlets extending through said casing, of aburner located in the lower part of said a closed inlet and an open annular gas channel decreasing in depth andwidth from the inlet point to a point opposite thereto, a gas supply pipewithin said casing having an outlet projecting within the burner inlet, a cap secured to said burner and projecting over said channel and having an upright annular flange projecting up between the inner and outer portions of the said double water-shell, said flange having a perforation therethrough,
