SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,748, dated July 4, 1893.
Application filed August 18, 1892.

Be it known that I, FRIEND W. SMITH, .I r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Nipples during Threading; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for holding nipples during the cutting of threads thereon, and has for itsobjects to secure the nipple holder proper within a head in such manner that said holder may bereadily removed and a holder for a different sized nipple as readily be substituted therefor, and to provide means whereby the nipple may after it is threaded be easilyremoved from the holder by the hand.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improvement, a nipple being shown in the holder; Fig. 2, a front elevation, and Fig. 3, a perspective showing the nipple and the several parts of my improvement in detached condition but in the proper relative position preparatory to assembly.

l is a head recessed at 2 to accommodate the nipple holder.
3 are slots cut in the wall of the recess 2 out through the face of the head.
4 is the nipple holder interiorly threaded to correspond with the thread on the nipple.
5 are lugs extending from the holder andadapted to enter the slots 3 when the holder is inserted within the head, the depth of such slots being such that the lugs are iiush with the face of the head, as shown clearly at Fig. l. The exterior of the head is threaded, as seen at 6, and a keeper 7 is provided which consists of a ring threaded interiorly at 8 to correspond with the thread 6, and having at its front edge a flange 9 which extends inwardly so as to afford a means for retaining the keeper within the head and is provided with slots lO as will be presently explained.

holder 4 is placed within the recess i. in the head, and the keeper 7 is screwed on said head until the flange 9 abuts against the lugs on the face of the head; or, the keeper may be assembled first with the slots l0 in alignment with the slots 3, and the holder then inserted into said recess through the keeper, the slots permitting of the passage of said lugs.
ll is the nipple' which has one end previously threaded, as seen at l2, the depth of the holder being less than the length of such threaded portion of the nipple, so that the rear end of the latter may abut against the inner wall of the casing, as shown at Fig. l. A tail-piece 13 extends rearwardly from the head and aords means whereby the latter may be held rigid in a vise during the threading of the nipple.
The operation of myimprovement is as follows: The parts being assembled as hereinbefore set forth, the nipple is driven by hand Within the holder, and the plain end of said nipple is then threaded. During the operation of threading, the rear end of the nipple will bind firmly against the back wall of the head, and in this connection I would state that a rotary disk may be arranged in any ordinary manner in the head, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, to constitute the abutment for the nipple, the effect of such disk being to prevent chaiing of the nipple. After the nipple has been threaded the keeper 7 is relaxed thereby removing the friction between the nipple and its abutment, and said nipple is then readily withdrawn from the holder by hand. I have shown holes 14 in the periphery of the keeper whereby pin levers may be utilized to manipulate said keeper.
To remove a nipple holder and substitute therefor a holder for a different sized nipple, the slots 3 and l0 are brought into alignment to leave a clear passage for the lugs 5, and such holders may then be readily withdrawn or inserted.
Vhen the keeper has been turned so that the slots 10 have passed by the lugs 5 on a holder, the latter will thereby be locked in position. Y
The function of the lugs and slots 3 is to IOO prevent the holder from turning, but ifsaid holder and recess 2 are of any other shape in cross-section other than round, said lugs and slots will not be necessary and the flange on the keeper would in such instance extend be yond the outer face of the holder. I do not therefore want to be limited to the details of construction of the holder and head the gist of my invention resting in the broad idea of securing the holder within the head by a relaxable keeper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In a device for holding nipples during threading, the combination of a head, the nipple holderseated within said head and fixed as against rotation, and a relaxable keeper secured to the head and provided with a flan ge which extends inwardly across the face of the head whereby the holder is confined, substantially as set forth.
2. A device for holding nipples during threading comprising an exteriorly threaded head having a recess, a nipple holder Within said recess and incapable of rotation, and an interiorly threaded keeper-ring around said head and provided at its outer face with a flange which extends inwardly beyond the lugs of the holder, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination ofthe exteriorly threaded head having a recess and gates within the wall of the latter, the nipple holder adapted to seat within said recess and having laterally extending lugs, and the interiorly threaded keeper-ring provided with an inwardly extending flange at its outer face and having slots within said ange, substantially as shown and set forth.
