DEHORNING IMPLEMENT.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,443, dated June 27, 1893.
Application filed February 25, 1893. Serial No. 463,677- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, THOMAS W. TYLER, of Tuscola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dehorning Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dehorning implements, and which is equally as well adapted to be used for cutting pipes, rods and bolts and other similar devices, and which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide an implement having several Wheels forming cutters which have operating parts so constructed that the said wheels are simultaneously moved toward a common center, whereby each of the wheels at all times assumes the same relative position to all of the other wheels and to the said common center. In implements heretofore constructed for this purpose, they have usually been composed of several wheels all of which have been rigidly journaled and immovable toward each other, while a single wheel is movable toward the said rigidly journaled wheels. Owing to this construction the movable wheel is of course farther from the rigidly journaled wheel when the implement is open to receive a large object, and this requires a greater sweep to complete the cutting circle around the object than is the case where the wheels are brought simultaneously together and at all times assume the same relative relation to each other as in my invention, as will be readily understood.
In the accompanying drawingsE-Figure 1, is an elevation of my invention, one of the plates being removed to show the operating construction. Fig. 2, is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the operating parts. Fig. 3, is a detached sectional view of the swiveled ends of the operating rods.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates a tubular handle to the outer end of which is suitably connected, preferably by screws, the two plates B which are preferably though not necessarily made of the shape here shown. An endwise moving rod 0 has its upper end moving in the lower end of the said tubular handle A, and its lower end guided by the laterally projecting lugs D extending from the inner face of one of the plates 13. A rod G has its lower end provided with a socket G which receives the upper end of the rod 0 and the two rods swiveled together by means of a screw I passing through said socket G into an annular groove a formed in the upper end of the rod 0. A handle K is attached to the upper endv of this screw rod G by means of which it is turned for the purpose of forcing it up within the tube or withdrawing it therefrom, fora purpose to be presently described.
A wheel cutter E is journaled upon the lower or outer end of the rod O and two levers N are pivoted to the plate B at opposite sides of the rod 0, as clearly shown in the figures of the drawings, and these levers carry the cutting wheels Q which are held in the relation shown to the wheel E journaled upon the lower or outer end of the rod 0. The inner ends of the levers N are provided with pins which project through slots L made in plate M extending from the said rod 0, and these slots form cams for the purpose of forcing the inner ends of the levers N in and out as the rod 0 is moved as will be readily understood.
I preferably though not necessarily place rollers upon the pins P which move in the slots L for the purpose of reducing friction.
Made transversely through the plates B, as shown in Fig. 1, is the circular opening J through which the object to be operated upon by the cutters is passed and the cutters are arranged around the center of the said opening so that they move simultaneously and equally toward the said center when the operating rod is turned. However in some instances it may be desirable to have an opening S as shown in Fig. 2, by cutting away the ends of the plates and this opening S extends into the opening J, whereby the object to be cut instead of being passed over the end into the said opening, the implement can be simply moved up to the object and passed through the cut away portion S into the said opening which the cutter wheels surround.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The rod G is turned in one direction by means of the handle K which forces the rod Gdownward. and with it the rod 0 which carries the slotted portion M forming cams, and these cam surfaces engaging the pins upon the lower end of the lever N, force their upper or outer ends inward simultaneous with the downward movement of the said rod 0, which itself carries the cutter E. Owing to this construction all of the cutter wheels move simultaneously toward a common center and are at all times equidistant apart, so that a slight oscillation of the implement back and forth will cause the cutter to make a continuous cutting circle around the object to be cut and sever it very quickly with but a very slight movement, as is clearly shown by the drawlugs.
I do not limit myself to a screw threaded rod for moving the rod G endwise for other mechanical means may be used for this purpose without departing from the spirit of my invention. So also a greater number of cutters may be used if desired the main object being to have all the wheels move simultaneously toward a common center and equally so that they are equidistant apart at all points of their motion toward the object to be cut, in contradistinction to having a series of rigidly journaled wheels as is common and a single movable wheel heretofore referred to.
While I here show the inner end of the lever N directly connected with the rod 0 through the cam surface, yet I do not desire to limit myself to this construction, for the said levers may be operated by the rod 0 through intermediate connections, and the same main idea of my invention carried out namely, the simultaneous movement of all of the cutters toward a common center.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
1. In an implement of the character described, the combination of a handle, levers carrying cutters, and an endwise moving opcrating rod carrying a cutter, the said levers being operatively connected with the said rod, whereby they all move equally toward a common center, substantially as described.
2. In an implement of the character described, an endwise moving operating rod, levers pivoted between their ends carrying outters beyond the outer end of the operating rod, a cutter upon the outer end of the said rod, and an operating connection between the said rod and levers, substantially as described.
3. An implement of the character described, comprising an endwise moving operating handle, an operating rod carrying cam surfaces, levers pivoted between their ends carrying cutters at their outer ends, the opposite ends of the said levers in engagement with the said surfaces, and an operating cutter upon the said rod, substantially as set forth.
4:. An implement of the character described, comprising an endwise moving operatingrod, levers having their outer ends bent inward and carrying cutters, the operating rod carrying a cutter upon the outer end inside of the said lever cutters, and an operating connection between the opposite end of said levers and the endwise moving rod, substantially as described.
5. An implement of the character described, comprising an endwise moving rod carrying arms having angular slots, levers pivoted between their ends carrying cutters at one end, the opposite ends of the said levers moving in the said slots, the outer end of the operating rod carrying a cutter, the parts operating substantially as specified.
6. An implement of the character described, comprising a tubular handle, an edwise moving rod therein, a cutter upon the outer end of the said rod, levers carrying cutters at their outer ends beyond the said rod cutter, and an operating connection between the said levers, and the said endwise moving rod,sub-
' stantially as specified.
7. An implement of the character described, comprising a tubular handle, plates secured to one end thereof, levers pivoted between their ends and between said plates, and carrying cutters at their outer ends, an endwise moving rod within the said tubular handle carrying a cutter, and an operating connection between the said levers and the said endwise moving rod, substantially as set forth.
8. An implement of the character described, comprising a tubular handle, carrying the screw threaded nut or block at one end, a screw threaded rod passing through the said block with its handle outside of the said tubular portion, levers pivoted between their ends carrying cutters at one end, the opposite ends of said levers being in operative connection with the endwise movingrod, and the cutter upon the end of the said rod, substantially as shown.
9. An implement of the character described, comprising a tubular handle, plates secured to the outer ends thereof, levers carrying outters an endwise moving rod guided at its outer end by the said plate, its inner end moving in the inner end of the said tube, an endwise moving rod within the tube, having a screw threaded portion at one end and its opposite end swiveled to the said rod carrying a cutter at its outer end, and an operating connection between the said levers and the lendwise moving rod, substantially as set fort 10.
