Be it known that I, RAGNVALD Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutters, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to means for cutting metallic pipe at substantially right-angles to its axis and particularly to a conveniently portable size of device adapted for this purpose.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, compact, light and durable device of the kind described, adapted to sever the end of the pipe without raising a bur or fins either upon the inside or outside of the pipe.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and de scribed, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts; Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a section taken substantially on line 83 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a section taken substantially on line 1t of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 8.,

In the preferred construction shown in the drawings, my device consists of a suitably formed frame provided with a lateral projection at each end, a guide or way extending between the projections, and a slide mounted upon said guide. The projection at one end of the frame is suitably formed to engage a pipe or other cylindrical body and hold the frame at substantially right angles to its axis. The projection at the opposite end of the frame is provided with a screw or other suitable means adapted to engage the slide and control its position upon the guide.
As shown the frame consists of two substantially parallel cylindrical rods 11 rigidly connected at their extremities by suitably formed members 2 and 3 respectively. The member 2 may be of any suitable form adaptedto engage a pipe or other cylindrical object and hold the frame at substantially right angles to the axis of the object while permitting the free movement of the frame about the object. In the form shown the member 2 extends laterally from the members 1 and is provided with a recess 4: in its face of suitable form to receive a pair of rollers 5 and support the same substantially parallel to the common plane of the rods 11. The rollers 55 may be of any suitable form. As shown each roller is substantially cylindrical and of sulficient length to hold the frame at substantially right angles to the axis of a pipe or similar object against the surface of which the rollers are securely held. Each roller is preferably mounted upon a suitable pin or shaft 6 the ends of which are rigidly supported in the walls of the recess 4 the rollers each being preferably freely rotatable upon their respective pins 6.
The connecting part 3 also projects laterally and is provided with an opening 7 substantially parallel to the rods 1. The lateral distance from the center of the opening 7 to the rods 1 preferably corresponding to the distance from the rods 1 to a point intermediate the rollers 55. In the preferred construction a portion of the opening 7 is threaded and a rod 8 or other suitable means provided with a threaded "portion at one end adapted to cooperate with the threads in the opening 7 is positioned in the opening. A handle 9 or equivalent means is preferably provided at the outer end of the rod 8 to rot-ate the same to control its position in the opening.
The parts 2 and 3 may be attached to the rods 11 in any suitable manner. In the form shown a portion 10 of each rod 1 is reduced in diameter to form a concentric shoulder 11 near the ends of the rod and the outer end of the reduced portion is threaded and provided with a suitable nut. The members 2 and 3 are each provided with suitable openings extending longitudinally therethrough with a part of each opening adapted to fit the body of the rod and a part adapted to fit the part 10 with a shoulder within the opening to engage the shoulder 11 and positively control the position of the parts upon the rods. This construction provides a strong and satisfactory connection between the rods and the parts 2 and 3 and gives the full strength of the rods -1 to resist the bending tendency l produced by the outward pressure upon the lateral projections of the parts 2 "and 3.

The object of this slight beveled portion is to avoid any tendency of the cutting edge of the cutter to crumble away in use and also it is found in practice that it materially aids in starting the operation of the device, and tends to avoid any tendency of the cutter to travel along the pipe as the tool is rotated about the same. In the preferred construction also the shaft 23 upon which the cutter is mounted is inclined slightly from the common planeof the rods 1l, the preferred arrangement being that the hub 20 adjacent the perpendicular side 22 of the cutter is slightly farther from the common plane of the rods 1l than the opposite hub so that the cutter when positioned is at a slight angle to the axis of the pipe upon which it is operating, tending to relieve any crowding or the tendency to move the cutter longitudinally of the pipe and also relieve the pressure upon the flat side of the cutter after the pipe is partially severed. This arrangement also tends to materially assist in mounting the cutter upon the work and greatly increases the life of the cutter.
In operation my device is placed upon the pipe in the usual manner and the cutter 15 brought into contact with the surface of the pipe after which the cutter is rotated about the pipe in the direction indicated in Figs.

The cutter is then rotated as before to sever the pipe in substantially the usual manner, the pipe being severed with one substantially square face and one beveled face. The work in all respects produced by my cutter is substantially the same as where the pipes are cut upon an engine lathe or similar devices.
The severed portion having the beveled face above referred to is not appreciably different from that produced .by the ordinary form of cutter, that is there is usually a slight intruded bur or flange but where this is objectionable my device may be merely reversed and so positioned as to cut oifthe beveled portion of the pipe with very little or no waste thus providing a'flat end as above described.
Having thus described my improvement, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications maybe made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention, hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exactform and construction shown.
What I claim as neW, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pipe cutter, a frame comprising a plurality of substantially parallel rods rigidly connected at their ends, a projection at one end of said rods to engage the Work and hold the frame at right angles thereto, a member mounted upon said rods for movement longitudinally thereof and carrying a single rotatable cutting disk With the axis of said disk slightly inclined to the common plane of the rods and to the axis of the Work, and means for controlling the position of said member upon the rods.
2. In a pipe cutter, a frame comprising a plurality of substantially parallel rods rigidly connected at their ends, a projection at one end of the rods to engage the Work and hold the frame at right angles thereto, a member mounted for longitudinal movement on the rods and carrying a rotatable disk having one face inclined and the other perpendicular to its axis whereby the cutting edge of said disk is formed substantially at said perpendicular side, and said disk carrying member supporting the disk With the axis of the disk slightly inclined to the common plane of the rods, and to the axis of the Work to be operated upon, and means for controlling the position of the disk-carrying member upon said rods.
3. In a pipe cutter, a frame comprising a plurality of substantially parallel rods rigidly connected at their ends, the connection at one end of the rods being extended laterally and arranged to engage a cylindrical object to hold said frame at substantially right angles thereto, a member mounted on the rods for longitudinal movement and carrying a single rotatable disk having one face thereof inclined and the other perpendicular to its axis, whereby the cutting edge of said disk is formed substantially at said perpendicular side, said disk-carrying member supporting the disk With the axis of the disk slightly inclined to the common plane of the rods and to the axis of the cylindrical Work to be operated upon, and means for controlling the position of said member upon the rods.

In a pipe cutter, a frame comprising a plurality of substantially parallel rods rigidly connected at their ends, the connection at one end of said rods beiiig extended laterally and arranged to engage cylindrical Work and hold. the same at substantially right angles thereto, a member mounted for longitudinal movement upon the rods and provided with a single rotatable cutting disk having one face inclined and the other perpendicular to its axis, whereby the cut ting edge of said disk is formed substantially at said perpendicular side, said diskcarrying member supporting the disk With the axis of the disk slightly inclined to the common plane of the rods and to the axis of the Work to be operated upon, the connection at the other end of said rods being also extended laterally and provided With a threaded bore extending therethrough, and a screw-threaded rod arranged to engage the threaded bore of said last mentioned lateral extension and connected with the disk carrying member to control the position of said member upon said rods.
5. In a pipe cutter, a rotatable cutting disk having one face inclined, and the other perpendicular, to the axis of the disk, the perpendicular face being beveled slightly at its periphery to meet said inclined face, thereby forming the cutting edge of said disk in close proximity to said perpendicular side.
6. In a pipe cutter, a rotatable cutting disk having one face inclined and the other perpendicular to the axis of the disk, the perpendicular face being beveled slightly at its periphery to meet said inclined face, thereby forming the cutting edge of said disk in close proximity to said perpendicular side, a frame for rotatably engaging a pipe and holding said disk With the axis thereof at a slight inclination to the axis of the pipe.

8. A pipe severing implement constructed and arranged to be moved circumferentially of the Work but to be held stationary With respect to movement longitudinally thereof during the cutting operation and comprising a frame including means at one end thereof to engage the Work and hold the frame at right angles thereto, and a cutting disk supported on the frame with its axis slightly inclined transversely to the longitudinal axis of the frame and also inclined to the axis of the Work to be operated upon.
9. A pipe cutter comprising a frame including a guide and a lateral projection at one end of the guide to engage'the Work and hold the guide at right angles to the same, a cutter carrying member arranged for movement longitudinally of the guide,
