SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,110, dated June 27, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BERRIGAN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Push-Button, of which the fol-' lowing is a full, true, and accurate description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters of reference refer to similar parts.
The object of my invention is to produce a push button having the advantages of cheapness, lightness, convenience in packing and simple adjustment, the product being an improvement upon the push button shown and described in an application filed by me April 7, 1892, Serial No. 428,236, in that greater accuracy, neatness and security of fastening are attained.
Figure 1 shows a form of shell made from one described and claimed a shell consisting of body,tip, and tongne,there heingbut oneopening in the said tongue, the shell beingbent at H. In attaching said shell to a surface, great care is necessary to insure the tip of the tongue 0, coming immediately underneath the opening D, and my present invention is designed with a view to insuring that the tip ofthe tongue, 0, shall come immediately underneath said opening without the exercise of extra care, and to insure a uniform appearance of the button, the button shown in my original application exposing one fastening and concealing the other.
As shown in my said application, Serial No. 428,236, the tip of the tongue, 0, of my present invention, may be broadened and the broadened portion depressed into a knuckle to take the place of an independent button,
without departing from my said invention, or a button of china, metal,rubber, or other substance may be cemented, glued, screwed, clutched or by any means affixed to the tip of said tongue, 0, as shown in an application filed by me simultaneously herewith. The shell maybe made from the blank in any suitable way, or may be formed from a sheet of material, by rolling or other methods.
The particular form of button contemplated by my present invention is affixed to the surface, in the following manner: The plug, I, preferably a conductor of electricity is inserted, as shown in Fig. 2, into the wall or surface connecting said plug to one wire (y) from battery, bending the tongue at H, passing the screw, J, through the openings F, and opening Z into the surface, bringing the tongue, 0, directly over the plug, I, and passing another screw, R, through the openingE. in lip B, and into the surface. Either of said screws J, B, may be connected to the wire (2) fromthe battery. Pressure upon the button K will cause a circuit, through plug, I, and tongue, 0, and upon the withdrawal of pressure the circuit will be broken.
Of course, the portions of the button concealed by the shell need notbe improved in appearance, which is an element of cheapness. The fastening device, I, being concealed may be attached by any suitable means to the Wires leading to the battery.
Although I have described and represented those details which I consider best adapted for practical purposes, it is to be understood that the form and arrangement of the parts may be modified in many respects which will be suggested by the judgment and experience of persons skilled in the art, without departing from my invention. WVhIle it will be seen from the foregoing description that the object of the lip, B, having the opening therein, is to provide a means of finally attaching a button to the surface, yet it will readily be understood that a shell having a flange entirely around its base may be used, and two or more openings made in said flange, or a shell having an extended base may be used, and open-- ings made in the base. The flange, or the extended base, should bear an opening to coincide with the opening in the extended tongue when the tongue is bent underneath, or a plurality of shells may be used having a common base, such common base having a number of extensions, or tongues, openings in the base coinciding with openings in the tongues.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shell for push-buttons, consisting of body, A, with opening D, therein, the lip B with opening E therein, and the tongue 0 with the openings F, Z, therein, being bent at H, substantially as shown and described.
2. A shell for push-buttons, consisting of body A, with opening D, therein, the lip B with opening E therein, the tongue 0 with openings F, Z, therein, being bent 'at H, the
tip of said tongue being depressed to form a knuckle substantially as described.
3. A push-button consisting of body, A, with opening D, therein, lip B, with opening E, therein, and tongue 0, with openings F and Z therein, having the said tongue 0 bent at H, the openings F and Z being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue, (Lbsing below the opening D, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. A push button consisting of body A, wit opening, D, therein, lip B, with opening E, therein, and tongue 0, with openings F and Z therein,.the tongue 0, depressed at its tip to form a knuckle, said tongue being bent at H the openings F and Z being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue, 0, de-
pressedinto the form of a knuckle,being below the opening D, so that the knuckle protrudes through the opening, D, substantially as described. 4
5. A shell for push-buttons, consisting of body, A, with opening, D, therein, and lip, B, and tongue, 0, with openings, F, Z, being bent at H, substantially as described.
6. A shell for push-buttons, consisting of body A, with opening, D, therein, the lip, B, and tongue, 0, with openings F, Z, therein, being bent at H, the tip of said tongue being broadened and depressed to form the knuckle.
7. A push-button consisting of body, A, with opening, D, therein, lip, B, and tongue, C, with openings F and Z therein, being bent at H, the openings F and Z being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue C, being below the opening,D, substantially as and for the purposes described.
8. A push-button consisting of body, A, with opening D therein, lip B, and tongue 0, with openings F and Z therein, the tongue, 0, depressed at its tip to form a knuckle, said tongue being bent at H, the openings F and Z being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue, depressed to form the knuckle,
being below the opening D, so that the knuckles protrude through said opening, D,
substantially as described.
9. A shell for push-buttons, consisting of body A, with opening D therein, and tongue, 0, with openings F, Z, therein, being bent at H, substantially as described. 10. A shell for push-buttons consisting of body, A, with opening, D, therein, and tongue 0, with openings F, Z, therein, being bent at H, the tip of said tongue being depressed to form a knuckle, substantially as described.
11. A push-button consisting of body, A, with opening D, therein, and tongue, 0, with openings F. Z. therein, having the said tongue,
O, bent at H, the openings F. Z. being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue, 0, being below the Qpening D, substantially as and for the purposes described. 12. A push-button consisting of body, A, with opening, D, therein, and tongue 0, with openings F, Z, therein, the tongue, 0, depressed at its tip to form a knuckle, said tongue being bent at H, the openings F, Z, being coincident to each other, and the tip of said tongue 0, depressed into the' form of a knuckle, being below the opening, D, so that the knuckle protrudes through the opening D, substantially as described.
