MACHINERY FOR CLEANING COTTON.
Speication of Letters Patent No. 4,999, dated March 6, 1847.
To all whom/1f may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT M. LIv1NG-.
sToN, of the city of Mobile, State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Machine for Cleaning Cotton, entitled Livingstons Improved Cotton-Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a perspective view.
This invention and improvement consists in the application of a net or any other kind of open work material, aflixed on arms radiating from a shaft, for the purpose of cleaning cotton, &c., exemplied as follows:
Fig. l, S, isa shaft, radiating from which are several arms A, A. To these arms stretched from one to another, is affixed (in any convenient method the sieve or open work material B and B each of which sections we will term a beater On the same shaft (and parallel with the open work beater), is aflixed a strip of wood or cloth F, for the purpose of a fanner.
Fig. 3 is a box in which the shaft is made to revolve-this box is closed in on every side with the exception of an opening at the end E for the emission of the cotton; The botto-m of this box is formed concave by means of strips of Wood or wire leaving interstices between them C. O n one side (inwardly) of this box is also an upright wire rack R.
Mode of action-The shaft S, (having any number of beaters affixed on it) being within a box. The cotton, &c., is put into it through an opening or hopper on the top,
is carried around by the revolution of the shaft, and is then acted upon by the open work beaters B, B, which beat and open the cotton, &c., looses and frees it of impurities,
