APPARATUS FOR OPERATING CONFECTl ONERY-KETTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,890, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed February 13,1892- Serial No. 421,470. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD SAVAGE, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new 7 and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Operating Mixing-Kettles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for operating mixing kettles,in which a kettle is supported and tilted in conjunction with mechanism for operating a stirrer therein; and one of the objects of my improvements is to provide operating mechanism, supported in conjunction with the kettie, for operating the stirrer, which is adapted to work the stirrer when the kettle is in its normal or upright position, and not interfere with the tilting of the kettle for emptying and cleaning.
Another object is to provide means whereby the stirrer may be readily detached from the operating mechanism, so that it may be removed from the kettle.
A further object is to provide means for holding the kettle in different positions between the vertical or normal position and the extreme point of inclination.
A still further object is to provide means for circulating steam un'der the kettle so as not to disconnect the circulation by the tilting of the kettle, and means for drawing off the condensation.
These objects I attain bythe mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus containing my invention, showing the kettle partially tilted. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the kettle detached and viewed at right angles to the view seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical central section through the entire apparatus. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and shows the plan of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail showing in plan view, a fragment of one of the stirring devices, with one of the scrapers attached thereto.
In the drawings, A designates a standard for supportinga suitable frame A, which consists preferably of a semicircular piece secured to the standard and provided with suitable bearings, a in which the trunn'ions, a of the kettle B. may rest and revolve, there being a suitable brace rod connection, as shown in Fig. 1, for connecting said frame with the floor to hold it securely in place. On the frame, there is mounted a shaft, A ,in asuitable bearing, and provided at one end with a friction clutch, A by which it is connected with, and disconnected from an operating pulley, A by means of a screw, a operated by alev'er, 0?, which is adapted when thrown in one direction, to move the clutch A into connection with pulley, A and when thrown in the opposite direction, to disconnect said parts.
, To the top of the kettle and at one side, I connect a supplemental frame B on which is mounted in suitable bearings, a shaft B On the outer end of this shaft, B I attach a gear wheel, B which gears into a pinion, b on the inner end of shaft A when the kettle is in its upright or normal position; and on the inner end of said shaft 13" is placed a gear 0 for operating a stirrer or stirrers supported on the inner end of said supplemental frame B. In the present instance, I provide two stirrers and adapt them to revolve in opposite directions. One of said stirrers consists of two arms 0 attached to a shaft, 0 which is stepped or journaled on the bottom of the kettle, passes through a sleeve, 0 and is provided with a miter gear, 0 near the top, The other of said stirrers consists of a loop or hoop D provided with cross pieces, D' said hoop being attached at its upper side to the sleeve, 0 and pivoted to the shaft, 0 at the bottom of the kettle. To the upper end of said sleeve, (3 is attacheda miter gear 0 and :the gear 0 on the inner end of shaft, 13 comes between the gears, c and c and engages with both of them, so that when rotated, it
imparts motion to the said gears, c and c in opposite directions. The arms O and the bars D are made preferably triangular in cross section, and placed in the liquid sothat one of their sharp edges shall come in front, @so as to cut the liquid as it is moved forward in it. The bars, D, are connected at their outer ends with hoop, D, and at their inner ends, to a collar or band, which is loose on the This collar or band is also shown in connection with arms, 0, where it has a set screw by which it is fixed to said shaft, as seen in Fig. 3.
The sleeve, Ciisjournaled inthe inner end of the frame, B, by means of a piece, 13, which is hinged at b and has a slot in which a pivoted latch, b on the supplemental frame works. Said pivoted latch has a thumb nut, b, for clamping the part B, upon the part, B, whereby said part, B, is adapted to hold the sleeve securely in place in its bearing, and at the same time, be readily detached by loosening the thumb nut, b sufliciently to allow the latch,b to be turned out of said slot, so that the stirrers can be taken out of the kettle with facility.
The stirrer, D, is provided with a series of scrapers, d, which are pivoted to eyes, (1', secured to the scraper by means of pins, 0?, which are each provided with a coil. spring wound upon said pins and having a loop, d which is adapted to bear upon the scrapers and press themgently outward against the inner surface of the kettle: said scrapers are adapted to travel in diiferent paths on the in-v ner surface of the kettle, so that the several scrapers will cover the entire inner surface occupied by the materials to be mixed.
The kettle has a double bottom with space, E, bet ween the two, which forms asteam chamber or receptacle for heating the kettle to reduce the material to be mixed by evaporation. This chamber communicates with steam pipes, E, which are set into thetrunnions, a, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, said truunionsbeing hollow, as shown at e, Fig. 5, so as to form a continuation of the pipe E, and the cou necting pipes E, Fig. 5, which connect said pipes, E, throughthe hollow, e, with the son rcc oints, as shown in Fig. 5, so that said trunnions can revolve thereon; said joints being of ordinary construction and consisting of the packing, 2' around the ends of pipes E and the screw cap a fitting upon the threaded ends of the trunnions a. nions a, is provided with a handle, F, for tilting the kettle,

This I do by mounting the pu1ley,'A loosely on the shaft, and limiting its movement longitudinally on said shaft by screw lock nuts, H, on the outer end of said shaft, and a collar, h, (Fig. 3) on the opposite side of said pulley, so that said pulley, while being free to revolve on the shaft, has no longitudinal play thereon. The clutch and its yoke, H,
are controlled bythe screw rod, 0, which is" threaded in the projection, h, of the frame A. The handle, a, is fixed to said screw rod so as to rock the same through .a half revolution back and forth, thereby impartinga positive but slight endwise movement to said screw rod sufficient to engage and disengage the clutch and pulley. M
In the bottom of the outer layer of the kettle,I provide an opening, 2', (Fig. 3) through which one of the pipes, E, is connected with the steam chamber between the layers,'and also provide a cock, '5', in connection with said opening, whereby the water of condensation may be drawn 0E when necessary.
Having thus described my. invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. In an apparatus for operating mixing kettles and in combination, astationary frame provided with a driving shaft and pinion, a kettle pivoted in said stationary frame so as to tilt" thereon, a supplemental frame mounted on said kettle, a revolving stirrer mounted on said supplementalframe and suspended in the kettle, and operatingmechanism mounted on said supplemental frame connecting the revolving stirrer with the driving shaft and pinion mounted on said stationaryframe; the supplemental frame and the parts mounted thereon moving with the kettle when tilted and throwing the operating mechanism out of gear with the driving pinion of the stationary frame, and into gear when the kettle is righted, substantially as specified.
2. The combination withthe kettle pivoted of a supplemental frame mounted on the kettle and tilting therewith, a stirrer journaled in said supplemental frame and suspended in the kettle, and operating mechanism mounted on i said supplemental frame and adapted to operate the stirrer as specified.
3. The combination with the kettle pivoted to its supporting frame, of .a supplemental frame mounted on the kettle and tilting therewith, an operating shaft, as B journaled on said supplemental frame, two stirrers, as G O and D D, suspended in the kettle from, said supplemental frame and stationary mechanism adapted to be disconnected by the tilting of the kettle and connected by the righting thereof with said operating shaft, B for revolving said stirrers in opposite directions as specified.
4c. The combination with the kettle, pivoted to its supporting frame, of a supplemental frame, mounted on the kettle, apd a stirrer journaled in said supplemental frame by a bearing having one part hinged to the other, whereby the stirrer may be connected and disconnected with said supplemental frame, as specified.
5. The combination with the kettle, of a revolving stirrer, as D, provided with hinged pressed scrapers, as d, adapted to scrape the interior of the kettle, as specified.
6. The combination with the kettle, pivoted to its supporting frame of the supplemental frame, mounted on the kettle and provided with an arm, G, and a latch g, on the supporting frame for locking said supporting and supplemental frames together, as specified.
