Description
(Nd Model.)
B. M. BUTZ. STRUUTURAL SHAPE.
Patented June 13, 1893.
FIGJ- FIG-2.-
A v mm 2M M m i 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD M. BUTZ, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
STRUCTURAL SHAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,652, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed January 3, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. BUTZ, a citizen of theUnit-ed States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Structural Shapes, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates generally to certain improvements in structural shapes, but more especially to those employed as posts, pillars, or columns, in buildings, bridges, &c., and consists, generally stated, in an H-shaped length of Wrought iron or steel provided with flanges along the edges of its side portions, the several parts of the shape being formed integral with each other, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a transverse section of myimproved structural shape. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the manner of bracing the shape when necessary, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite side ,of the shape.
In the practice of my invention, a bloom, slab or ingot is reduced by a series of passes between suitably constructed rolls to the shape or form shown in Fig. 1. This shape or form consists of two plane side pieces 1 arranged parallel or approximately so to each other. These side pieces are connected by a web 2, having its edges united to the sides about midway of their width. The junctions Serial No. 457,015. (No model.)
of the web with the side pieces are strengthened by fillets 3. Along the outer edges of the side pieces are formed flanges 4, which project outwardly at greater or less angles to the side pieces. These flanges afford points for riveting or bolting braces, beams or other connections to the pillar, post or column.
When the shape is to be subjected to such a load as will be liable to cause the side portions to buckle or bend, they may be strengthened by a series of braces, consisting of a lattice work formed of short metal strips 5 crossing each other and having their ends riveted or bolted to the flanges or the side pieces may be braced by a metal plate 6, extending from side piece to side piece and riveted or bolted to the flanges, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim herein as my invention 1. A wrought iron or steel structural shape, consisting of two side pieces connected by a web, and provided with flanges along their outer edges, said parts being formed integral with each other, substantially asset forth.
2. A wrought iron or steel structural shape, consisting of two side pieces connected by a web and provided with flanges along their outer edges in combination with transverse braces arranged between the side pieces near their outer edges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EDWARD M. BUTZ. l/Vitnesses:
R. H. WHITTLESEY, DARWIN S. WOLCOTT.
