LOCKING DEVICE FOR DIFFUSION-CELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,529, dated June 13, 1893. Application filed October 24:, 1892. Serial No. 44.9,771. (No model.)
the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for diffusion cells, the ob ject being to provide more simple, convenient and efficient locking mechanism for the purpose, than has heretofore been devised.
With this object in view, myinventio'n con-- sists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings is shown a preferable embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the lower portion of a diffusion-cell provided with myimproved locking mechanism. Fig. 2 isa left hand side elevation relative to Fig. 1 with the position of parts corresponding to that shown in solid Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the lever-plate partly broken away, showing an intermediate position of the parts of the locking mechanism with lateral pin K of the lever-plate in section, and with the roller mounted on said pin in position for actuating the locking-hook or latch. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan in section on line 4-4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the latch-plate of the looking mechanism, and Fig. 6 is a section of the same on line 66, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is an elevation of the outer side of the lever-plate. Fig. 8 is a right hand end elevation relative to Fig. 7, and Fig. 9 is a section on line 7, 7, Fig. 7. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of the middle or supporting-plate of the locking-mechanism, and Fig. 11 is a section on line 11-11, Fig. 10.
7 Referring to the drawings, A represents the bottom or lower section of the cell. The same is substantially of the shape of an inverted cone, said cell on one side being provided with a flanged opening, A, at which the pulp remaining in the cell, after the extraction of the saccharine matter, is discharged. The flange A of the opening is preferably integral with bottom A, the lower side of said flange constituting substantially an extension of the opposite side of the inverted conicalshaped bottom of the cell, the outer end of flange A being preferably at right angles, or approximately so, to thelower or forward side of said flange.
0 represents the door for closing the discharge-opening, the same being hinged, as at C, in any suitable manner at one side of the flange A The lower side of flange A is provided with a flanged opening A (see dotted lines Fig. 2) through which the saccharine matter or juice is discharged.
Door'C is provided with a yoke or bar, D,
that extends centrally across the outer side of the door and is adapted to be engaged by suitployed in the difiusion of the substance from which the saccharine matter or juice has been extracted, and more or less of the waste-water is discharged with the pulp or residuum after the diffusion process. I have, therefore, devised the locking mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein E represents a plate provided with holes, 6, for the passage of bolts, e, to secure the same to the outer side of flange A of the pulp-dischargeopening of the dilfusion-cell opposite to the side at which the door for closing said opening is hinged. Said plate, at its inner side, isprovided with a laterally-projecting cylindrical lug, E, upon which is loosely mounted latchplate F, said plate being perforated, as at F, for the purpose and terminating in its outer end in a latch or hook, f, adapted to hook over yoke or bar D at the outer side of the door and lock the latter. The latch-plate, being loosely mounted upon lug E of plate E, it is adapted to be oscillated upon its bearing, as required, in lifting said latch to unlock the door. The latch-plate is provided with a recess, F in open relation with perforation F. The outer sidewall of recess F is concentric with the axis of bearing E, and the position of the lower end wall, f of this slot is preferably perpendicular, or approximately so, to the hook or latch. The bottom wall of said recess is cut away, as at F, so as to rearwardly elongate perforation F, whereby the latch-plate is capable of being reciprocated upon its bearing, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The latch-plate is secured in place upon its bearing by means of a cap or washer, G, and a cap-screw or bolt, g, that engages a correspondingly threaded hole in lug E of the latch-plate. At its outer side supporting plate E is also provided with a laterally-projecting cylindrical lug, E upon which is loosely mounted lever-plate,I, whereby said plate is adapted to oscillate upon its bearing, the axis of bearing, E ,'being coincident with the axis of bearing E.
Lever-plate I, at one side, is provided with a socket, I, for receiving lever-arm or lever J, the latter at its outer end terminating in a handle, J. (See Fig.1.) The lever-plate, at the side of its bearing approximately diametrically opposite to the location of lever J, has a laterally inwardly-projecting boss, 1 that is adapted to traverse a slot, 6 in supportingplate E, said slot being arranged concentric with the lugs or bearings E E The hole in boss I is internally screw-threaded and receives a correspondingly externally-screwthreaded pin, K, (see Fig. 4) that is preferably of steel, said pin extending outside of the boss and having mounted upon its outer end a roller, L, that is adapted to traverse recess F in the latch-plate. The lever-plate is secured in place by means of a cap or washer, M, and a cap-screw or bolt, m, that engages a correspondingly threaded hole in lug or bearing E Supporting plate E, directly forward of bearings E E is provided with an L-shaped slot, e the upright portion of said L-shaped slot being foremost and concentric with the axis of bearings E E Said L-shaped slot is adapted to be traversed by a laterally-projecting pin, F, of latch-plate F, said pin being preferably of steel.
The arrangement of parts is such that when the locking-mechanism, is in the position of locking the door 0 of the diffusion-cell, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, operating lever J projects forwardly or outwardly, roller L is in position engaging the upper end wall of recess F in the latch-plate and the rear side of bearing E, and pin F of the latch-plate engages the rear end wall of the horizontal portion of L-shaped slot 2 in the centrally-located supporting-plate E, the various bearings being substantially in line with the hook or latch. In unlocking door D, lever J is oscillated, on its axis upwardly or rearwardly, that is, in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, and operates idly until roller L engages the opposite end of recess F in the latch-plate, as shown in Fig. 3, when the lever has obtained an upright position. Upon a further movement of lever J, (of course in the same direction) the latch-plate, by means of the elongated perforation in said plate, and pin F of said plate in engagement with horizontal portion of L-shaped slot 6 will be reciprocated or moved forwardly, (and thereby loosen the locking-hook or latch,) until pin F has engaged the angle or turn in said L-shaped slot, whereupon, a still further movement of said lever (of course in the same direction) until into engagement with the upper end wall of L-shaped slot e in the central supportingplate, will actuate the latch-plate to lift hook or latch f, above bar or yoke D of the door of the cell, thereby unlocking said door.
By my improved construction, it will readily be observed that the operator need not get in front of the door to unlock the same.
The lock can be manipulated with great convenience and dispatch, is exceedingly simple in construction, and by the arrangement of parts shown and described, it is quite apparent that, when the parts are in position locking the door, no excessive strain is brought to bear on any particular piece.
What I claim is- 1. In a fastening device for diffusion cells, the combination with a supporting-plate or member, E, provided at each side with a laterally-projecting lug or bearing, of a latchplate loosely mounted upon the one bearing and provided with a latch or hook, a leverplate loosely mounted upon the other bearing, and provided with a lever-arm or lever, and suitable means whereby the hook or latch of the latch-plate is actuated to lock or unlock, according as said lever-arm or lever is moved or operated in the one direction or the other, substantially as set forth.
2. In a fastening device for diffusion cells, the combination with a supporting-plate or member, E, provided at each side with a laterally-projecting lug or bearing, of a latchplate loosely mounted upon the one bearing and provided with a latch or hook, a leverplate loosely mounted upon the other bearing, and provided with a lever-arm or lever, the
stopped by pin F of the latch-plate coming axes of said bearings being coincident or approximately so, and suitable means whereby the hook or latch of the latch-plateis actuated to lock or unlock, according as said lever-arm or lever is moved or operated in the one direction or the other, substantially as set forth.
3. In a fastening device for diffusion cells, the combination with asupporting-plate, provided at each side with a laterally-projecting lug or bearing, of a latch-plate loosely mounted upon the one bearing and provided with a latch or hook, a lever-plate loosely mounted upon the other bearing and provided with a lever-arm or lever and suitable means adapted to be actuated by said lever to cause the hook or latch to lock or unlock, and whereby the latter is first reciprocated or moved outwardly and then oscillated upon its bearing to unlock, substantially as set forth.
4. In a fastening device for diffusion cells, the combination with a supporting-plate or member, E, provided with a laterally-projecting lug or bearing, E, and an L-shaped slot, e of a latch plate loosely mounted on the aforesaid bearing, said latch-plate being provided with an elongated perforation at its bearing and with a laterally-projecting pin adapted to traverse the L-shaped slot afore said lugs or bearings, recessed and slotted, as 20 at F, F F and provided with a laterallyprojecting pin or member adapted to traverse slot e in member E, and a lever-plate loosely mounted on the other lug or bearing of the supporting member and having a lever-arm or lever, said lever-plate being provided with a roller 0r suitable member adapted to traverse recess F and slot e of the latch-plate and. supporting-member, respectively, the arrangement of parts being substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
