UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM T. HARPER, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
CAP FOR TOBACCO-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 499,384, dated June 13, 1893.
Q Application filed May 19, 1892. Serial No. 433,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM T. HARPER, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Tobacco-Pipes; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters OfrefQrence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cap detach ed from the bowl. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of same shown in position.
The same letters refer to like parts.
My invention has relation to new and improved caps for tobacco pipes.
Its object is to provide a pipe with a cap that may be readily attached thereto or removed therefrom, that will not deface the bowl thereby, and that will prevent the fire or tobacco from being blown out when the wind blows and from falling out when the pipe is being carried inthe pocket.
It consists of a cap composed of a rim or base having prongs adapted to extend down into the bowl and to hold said rim upon the top of the bowl and a slotted cover hinged to said rim and adapted to be locked thereto, said cover having a rotary slide pivotally attached to it and said slide having slots therein to correspond with the slots in the cover, and in certain details of construction which will be hereinafter more particluarly described.
In said drawings (1 represents the bowl of a pipe; I) a rim adapted to conform to and rest upon the top of the bowl and having a central bore a. Projecting out from the under side of said rim are prongs d arranged so as to extend down into the bowl when the rim is in position. and to press against the Walls thereof. Attached to said rim in any convenient manner is a cover e having perforations f therein and pivotally attached to said cover is a slide g having perforations h whereby by the rotation of said slide the perforations in the slide may register with It will be evident that the slide may be on the outside of the cover or if it is not desired to fill the pipe Without removing the cap, the
cover may be made integral with the rim.
I amaware that pipes have been made having a rim rigidly attached to the bowl and having-a perforated cover and slide and I do not claim broadly a cap having a perforated cover andgslide, but only the form hereinafter specifically claimed.
The advantage of my improved cap is that it is readily detachable from the pipe and that it does not necessitate marring the bowl by rivets or nails. Moreover a cap is ordinarily not desired by smokers when the pipe is in use except when it is windy and when the pipe is put into the pocket, as it interferes with the even burning of the tobacco and soon gets blackened so as to disfignre the pipe.
My device permits the cap to be used or not as desired and while it may be used with any pipe, it is specially desirable for use with very nice pipes. The prongs may be made of flexible metal so that by bending them they may be made to fit perfectly any size bowl.
Having thus described my invention and 7 its use, I claim-- 1. In a cap for smokers pipes, a circular rim adapted to rest on the edge of the pipe and having a central opening, flexible prongs attached to the under side of said rim, a cover hinged to said rim having perforations therein and a rotary plate attached to said cover and having perforations adapted to .register with the perforations in said cover, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. Inacap for smokers pipes,a rim adapted to rest upon the edge of the pipe and having a central opening equal to the interior diameter of the pipe, flexible prongs on the under side of the rim, a cover hinged to the top In testimony that I claim the foregoing as of said rim and adapted to be shut down my own I affix my slgnatnre in presence of over said opening and having perforations two witnesses.
therein and a rotary plate attached to said ABRAHAM T. HARPER. cover and having perforations therein adapt- Witnesses: ed to register with the perforations in the ELGIN O. VERRILL,
cover, as and for the purposes set forth. NATHAN CLIFFORD.
