UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES O. CLARK, NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CARPET STRETCHER AND TACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,372, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed March 9, 1893.
' and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
, The object of this invention is to facilitate and render more easy the operation of laying carpet, and it consists in the improved carpet stretching and tacking device and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section taken on line m, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a rear View showing acertain slide partly raised; Fig. 5 a section, on an enlarged scale, taken at line y, Fig. 1. Fig.6 is a section taken at line 2, Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a section taken on line to, Fig. 1.
In said drawings, a indicates a handled rod at the lower end of which isatransverse block or piece, I), having a toothed plate, 0, at the back edge adapted to engage the carpet and, when the handled rod is pushed upon, to force said carpet into position.
The block, b, is chambered, as at d, and is provided with a valve or valves 0, controlled by springs f, said springs tending to close said valves automatically. Above the block are passages g, h, which unite at i, and coincide with a hopper recess or receptacle j, in the valves. Connecting with the passage, h, is a tube is which extends longitudinally along the rod a, and connects with a passage or chamber, Z, into which a series of tack chambers, m, open, the said chambers being closed at their outer ends by a slide, n, and at their inner ends where they connect with the cham- $erial No. 465,220. (No model.)
ber Z, by a valve ohaving a single opening or passage, p, therein adapted to coincide with the tack chambers.
In line with the passage, 9, is arranged, longitudinally with respect to the handled rod, ahammer rod, q, which slides in bearings r, r, and is preferably held in its raised position, by asuitable catch 0", so that it will not be loose and in the way when stretching the carpet.
In operating the device, the stretcher recep tacles or chambers m, m, are each provided with a tack; the toothed plate, 0, is then brought into engagement with the carpet and the latter forced into the desired position at which it is to be tacked. When in this position the valved slide, 0, is moved longitudi nally into coincidence with one of the tack chambers and the tack therein drops, point foremost into the chamber, Z, through tube It I and passages h, 7;, into the hopper shaped recess or chamber, j, in line with the sliding hammer. rod, g, which is then loosened from its catch, r, and forced downward. It engages the head of the tack and the latter is driven into the carpet, the valves 6, 6, being forced apart to admit the passage of the tack between. The hammer is then drawn up, the valves close together automatically, and the device is ready to be employed in connection with a repetition of the .operation described. The slide valve, 0, is regulated in its sliding movements by a spring or snap, s, which engages a notched edge if, of said slide valve, 0, as will be understood upon inspection of Figs. 1 and 2, so that when the valve is drawn or pushed it will stop when the opening, 10, engages one of the chambers m.
I am aware that modifications may be made in the construction of the device without departing from the invention.
Having thus described the invention, What Iclaim as new is- 1. Theimproved carpet stretching and tacking device, combining therein the hammer, stretching rod and teeth and a series of tack chambers and a slide valve and passages admitting the passage of the tacks into line with said hammer, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the carpet stretcher, a tack hammer and a series of chambers for tacks arranged in said carpet stretcher, means 10 valve 0, passages h, t, 70, Z, for the tack, valves e, e, springs f, f, therefor and a hammer for driving the tack between said valves 6 6 into the carpet substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of 15 February, 1893. 7
