To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JAMES A. ROGERS, of Glencoe, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching and Biveting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved form of punch-pliers, the object of my invention being to provide a new and useful form of pliers or pinchers suitable for attaching to the ears of animals a novel and useful form of ear-mark which I have invented and which forms the subject of a separate application (Serial No.437,181) filed June 18, 1892, which pliers are at the same time adapted to receive scale, disconnected. Fig. 4 is a detail of a punch which may be used in combination with the pliers. Fig. 5 is a detail of the stop for the punch. Fig. 6 shows the same with parts separated. Fig. 7 is a detail of the rivet. Fig. 8 is a detail of the earmark for which the pliers are peculiarly adapted. Fig. 9 is a detail of the washer used therewith, and Fig. 10 is a detail of the crimper used in affixing the ear-mark.

Myimproved form of pliers has the usual handles 1 which are normally pressed apart by a spring 2, and one of which is provided with a stop 3 screwed therein so as to permit of the adjustment of the minimum distance between the jaws. The upper jaw 4. is provided on its under or inner surface with a circular recess 6, and is slit longitudinally at 7 to receive the upright portion 8 of the Serial No. 437,180. (No model.)

ear-mark 9, the circular or disk-like part 10 of which fits in the recess 6 of the jaw. The ear-mark has a hollow stem 11 which in operation is driven through the ear of being in position, the jaws are pressed together, and the stud 17 of the crimper enters the hollow stem of the ear-mark, spreads the same and .secures the Washer 13 thereto. The upper jaw besides being slit longitudinally has a central cylindrical perforation 18 adapted to receive the hollow stem 19 of the form of punch used in connection with my improved pliers, which has a circular flange 20 adapted to be received in the recess 6,and is provided at its upper end with two fins or shoulders 21, which are of such thickness as to pass readily upward through the slit 7, the punch beinginserted by being pressed upward through the under side of the upper jaw, and the punch being then turned through an angle, securing the same in position by reason of the fins 21 bearing upon the upper surface of the jaw, while thepunch is prevented from being drawn longitudinally away from the jaw, by reason of the diameter of the stem 19, which fits in the perforation 18, being greater than the width of the slit 7.

In connection with the punch I use a circular stop 22 adapted to rest in the recess 14. of the lowerj aw. This stop consists of two parts, an upper disk 23 perforated centrally at 24 to receive the end of the punch, and a lower disk 25 fitting within the upper disk, and containing on its upper surface a protuberance 26 which enters the hollow stem of the punch. It is easily seen that the above arrangement permits of punches of various sizes and shapes of apertures being used with the same pliers. In order to retain the upper and lower parts of the ear-marks, and punches in their p0sitions in the pliers, I use springs 27 secured by screws 28 in recesses 29 in the sides of the upper and lower jaws, which springs bear firmly upon the sides of the disks entering the circularrecesses in these jaws, and so hold them in position.

The rivet-holder 39 shown detached in Fig. 3 consists of a spring 30 secured at one end to the upper jaw of the pliers by a screw 31, and carrying at the other end the rivet-holding mouth 32 provided with cheeks 33, which are received in suitably shaped apertures 34 in the jaw. Those edges of the cheeks which are nearest the outer ends of the jaws are recessed at 35 thereby permitting the flat head 36 of the rivet to enter between the recesses and slide between the cheeks. There are grooves 37 in the inner sides of the checks to guide the head of the rivet. Before placing the rivet in position, the spring 30 is pressed down upon the top of thejaw, which brings the recesses 35 and grooves 37 just below the lower surface of the upper jaw. This permits the head of the rivet to be slid between the cheeks in the grooves 37, and the spring 30 on being released holds the head of the rivet firmly against the lower surface of the upper jaw. On the opposite surface of the lower jaw I provide a crimping surface 38 which may be either integral with the jaw, or may be made separate therefrom and secured into position in the same way as the crimper used with the ear-mark. After the rivet is secured where desired, it can slide out of the grooves 37 as the pliers are drawn away from the rivet.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a tool of the character described, the

combination of two pivoted jaws one of which is provided with an upsetting die and the other carries a rivet holding device compris ing a spring secured at one end to the outer surface of said jaw, the said spring carrying cheeks provided with recesses to receive the rivet head and which pass through apertures in the jaw and which is also slotted at its end to receive the tag substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a tool of the character described, the combination of two pivoted jaws whereof one is slotted at its end,said slot having a central circular aperture, and the other jaw has a screw threaded perforation, in combination with a hollowed punch, having a shoulder extending entirely around it, and at its upper end having projections on opposite sides of said punch, said punch being adapted to fit in the aperture in the center of said slot substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. In a tool of the character described the combination of two pivoted jaws, one of which is provided with a crimping surface and the other slit longitudinally and has a circular aperture centrally of the slot, and a rivet holding device secured to the jaw, comprising checks to engage and hold between them the rivet head, and a spring adapted to press the head of the rivet against the surface of the jaw, substantially as described.
